HI everyone!  I stopped taking prilosec last Monday(Sept.11).  So far I'm ok, everynow and then I have this acid feeling in my throat.  I had some tacos last Thursday and that made the heartburn worse! I took 1 zantac and was feeling better the next day.  I have been using DGL(licorice) and some tea made of slippery elm, marshmallow root, licorice, orange peel extract and other herbs.  I have been watching what I eat somewhat.
I immediately noticed that after I quit taking the prilosec that I have no more gas, abdominal pain and chest pain!  It's been a year since I have started using PPI's and I am done w/ it.....I think it actually makes GERD worse.
I tried some pickles(read online at earthclinic.com) and it seemed to help as well.  You have to get the kosher kind, whole pickles.

I hope this will encourage some of you to try to get off your PPI's. Of course you might want to consult your Dr. first. I have consulted both my internist and my gastro doctor and they both think I should be on PPI.....maybe not for long-term use though.

God bless

where did you get your licorice and the tea. the site where i get my vitamins doesnt say if its DGL licorice . IVe read good stuff on the elm and marshmallow and orange peel. I just ran out of prilosec and i thought i was getting better , but i woke up with the reflux for some reason and stomach trouble.

I also started on acidophilus and i drink apple cider vinegar twice a day. Its no longer in my throat though. Feels like its in my lower middle chest right above the stomach

I got the licorice and the tea from Whole Foods Market. The licorice is very strong and I had to get used to it, it said it the container that it tastes good :-). The tea taste good and I love it. The (deglycyrrhizinated) DGL licorice brand is Premier One Pro DGL. The tea is called Traditional Medicinals (Throat Coat). I was thinking of also trying apple cider vinegar. Don't get the regular licorice, I think that can cause your blood pressure to go up.
I actually am feeling better as each day passes by... for sure that Prilosec is all out of my body. When you quit taking it you might have the stomach trouble and nausea bec. your body is getting adjusted but just hang in there, it will get better in a few days. Some people have rebound acid after they quit the PPI but it will go away after a while.
I hope you will feel better too.

I didn't buy it online so I don't know where you live....are there any health food stores around where you live? You can check there. Sorry, can't help you much to find it online. I will check to see if the Whole Food Stores have a website. It's a very big food store and I think they're all over the USA.

You can find the DGL form of licorice (does not cause high blood pressure) at this mail order site.  I've been using their supplements for more than 20 yrs.
I've had success with DGL.  Dissolve 3 tablets in your mouth (must be dissolved with saliva before swallowing) 20 minutes before you eat.  I do this three times a day and also take 2 before I go to sleep.

Twarrior,
I looked at the website but I didn't see that it was DGL. Try this one below.
http://www.herbspro.com

I checked and they have them.

At Puritan Pride (click on my prior posting) you can get DGL for a pretty good price 2 for 1. Just type in DGL in the search on the site and it will come up.

Make sure you don't drink chamomile tea if you have allergic rhinitis, very allergenic.

Ttwarrior,
Rhinitis is like allergy....runny nose and stuff. Anyway, I looked in Kentucky since my our family is moving there this fall. I found a Whole Foods Market. Here's the address and phone:
Louisville
4944 Shelbyville Rd
Louisville, KY 40207
502.899.5545
Store Hours: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
I copied it from their website. It's a great store and they will have everything you need there. The DGL licorice there is only 12.00 for 60 (300 MG) chewable tabs.
Not sure if that store is close to you.

Rhinitis is hay fever, usually allergies to tree and grass pollen.
