I have cayenne, hawthorne berries, garlic, dgl licorice

I take my bp med in the morning, multi with lunch, an hour later headache med, and prilosec an hour before dinner.

I assume i take the dgl licorice before bed because i get worse at night, and i take the cayenne, hawthorne and garlic after dinner?

I think i can go off the prilosec and take the  licorice or no

You might need to talk to your doctor before taking the licorice. I think that I read somewhere that black licorice can raise your blood pressure, please be careful and let the doctor know about everything your taking. It's nice to have natural remedies but they can be dangerous. Some pharmacists might be able to help you and could tell you more about the side effects of dgl licorice.
Good luck with everything

its the dgl form, and what everyone in here takes as far as the licorice.

Also my doc is one of those docs that goes off if he hears you even take 1 vitamin C

i take the bp med at 9 am and the licorice around 11 pm

Hi ttwarrior.  So you got the DGL...that's great.  I usually take one in the morning 20 mins before breakfast, 1 at lunch if needed and 1 before bedtime.  The dosage is 300 each chewable tablet.  If I feel I need it,I also take it.

ttwarrior - you got the wrong form of DGL - they know now that it should be dissolved with saliva for best results.

The point of DGL is to soothe the esophagus, it has to be the chewable type.  It also has to be dissolved slowly  in your mouth with SALIVA for it to be effective.  It is always taken 20 minutes before meals or snacks and before bedtime.  You can adjust the dosage to what you need.  I need 3 each time for now but it has controlled all my symptoms without any drugs.

Here are a few sites from Dr. Weil (a Harvard Medical Doctor who believes in traditional and herbal medicine - probably one of the few in the US that does) to give you some direction.  You can check his site further for more information on DGL.  I had read on one page that he recommends taking up to 4 DGL tablets at a time, depending what you feel you need.
Hope this helps you get on the right track back to good health.
Please try to eat more alkaline food too, that has been very helpful to me.
See my posting on alkaline diet.

ttwarrior...yes the chewable is what you need. Not sure if the capsule kind will work, unless of course if you open it up and mix it w. saliva in your mouth.
I have found that this works for me....plus eating light and not drinking too much water during meals. Have you also tried slippery elm and marshmallow root? Those work really well too. I use them in a drink form. I have not had to use my prescriptions anymore....thank God.

The ONLY form of DGL licorice that should be used by people with GERD is the CHEWABLE one.  Apparently they did come out with the capsule type first but then it was discovered that you need your saliva to actually activate the beneficial part of the licorice.  It coats your esophagus and helps it heal.  You dissolve it slowly in your mouth with your saliva 20 minutes before you eat anything and at night right before you go to sleep.
I have been using 3 Tablets at a time and it's controlling my GERD symptoms without any drugs.  I also take it at night.
There is a warning on my bottle (that I already posted on this site) that people with kidney or liver disease should not take it at all.

gpalmos,

Get the DGL kind....not the regular kind. If you go to any health food store they should now the difference. Make sure you get the chewable kind only. It tasted bad unless if you like the taste of licorice, but you will get used to it. I get my supply at Whole Foods Market. There's a store in every major city. I don't like buying supplements online, I'd rather go to the store and get it the same day and see what I'm actually getting. It's up to you.

Oh you all have been helpful.  I am going to get the dgl licorace. My husband will be happy too, we both would rather use herbal things then take meds.  I wrote everything down.  But someone mentioned marshmallow root?  How do you take this?   I make my own slippery elm from the bark.  Very easy and you can freeze it.   I was told the recipe by a license herbalist who makes herbal formulas.  Also black walnut has healing properties too. I used that and the slippery elm for quite awhile, it heals the colon and gets rid of parasites too.

I also have been trying to find an herb(s) that will help asthma.

Debimum,
I got a tea that has marshmallow root, dgl, burdock root and orange peel extract from Whole Foods Market. They also have the liquid tincture kind. The tea is almost 5 bucks for 16 tea bags. Kind of expensive.

So how do you make this slippery elm tonic? I'd like to try. Can u give me the recipe?

Precious,

   Slippery Elm.

6 ounces of distilled water (must be distilled water)

1 ounce of the slippery elm bark, (has to be the real bark only)

put in a crockpot for 4 hours on low. strain to get the bark removed, but don't use a paper strainer, you want some of the particales in the liquid.. and put into 1 cup or 2 cup containers, you can freeze it. either keep the bark in the fridge or put in freezer.  Makes about three 8 ounce bottles.

My son has some acid reflux and asks for a bottle every now and then.

We used to buy it from our herb guy, it's costs $40 from him, They have been swamped with orders so he gave me two recipes for things. They are really good with their herbs, they have most all liquid, he said liquid is better, we get our hawthorne berry from him too, it has capsicum in it to work better for the heart.  I also get the hawthorneberry syrup to carry with me in case I get chest pains.  What do you take the hawthorne for?   I also use pepperberry to rid acid, but I have been lax in that lately. The people are from Ohio, it's such a neat story about how they came about and what they do for people. They have educated me very much in what to take for things.  I use echineca/golden seal now when I have to have an antibiotic.  I only use it two weeks and then use the plain echinecea in between.  I have to get on that now because I think I may have a esophogeal infection.  Doctors don't seem to care to find out what is going on, I have been pushed from doctor to doctor this week and with no relief for anything.  So I am going back to the herbs. May take some time with them.

I don't know of any Whole Foods Market in our area, we are in PA. What do you drink the tea for with all those herbs in? And what do you take the marshmallow, for? I have a booklet from my herb people I will look up burdock. My sister in law was taking that when she had cancer. They also have a cancer herb I was taking that when I had abnormal paps for years, I now do not have abnormal paps.  I also was taking a tbsp. of olive oil in the morning and one in the evening for cholesterol and taking a tbsp of a mixture they gave for circulation called super tonic.  that's easy to make also and it works wonders for circulation.   And it's stuff you probably have in your house, it's also good for the heart. But I take it with food, it's like a hot sauce.  So I don't take it right now because of my probabal problem with my esophogus.  but it surely works along with the olive oil to lower cholesterol.  Mine was 284 on november and by that august it went down to 208.  So there are things to do for the cholesterol.

I took the DGL for 4 months and it does work pretty good but then I began having headaches.  Didn't know what it was from so I stated eliminating some herbs and it was the DGL.  Now I try to take it and in two days I have a headache.  I wish i could still take it because it does work well.  Hope it works for you.
