Hi,

I'm new to this board. I have been suffering everyday for over a year. I have the acidic taste in my mouth at all times, everyday. It acutally burns the back of my tongue. My doctors have tried all meds, prilosec, acphiex, nexium, protonix and so on. They have given up and advised me to try antidepressents. I am against those. I am not depressed emotionally. I'm only upset because I can't live a normal life. I lost 18lbs,went down to 101 and now have put back 6lbs. This effects my social life and my eating habits. Does anyone else suffer or have any suggestions

Thanks
Melinda

Some antidepressants help the body perform functions better in lower dosages. For example, Amitrypline (sp?) is used to treat Fibromyalgia and some neurological conditions. Talk to your doctor about what drugs he wants to put you on and the dosages. I've got advanced acid reflux in combination with Crohn's disease. For the AR, I take Aciphex in the a.m. and Reglan, Zelnorm and Zegerid in the evening and some nights it does nothing.

Have you kept a food diary to track what foods affect you worse than others?

Thank you for responding. Yes I do keep a food diary and that's the strange thing about about the acid taste in my mouth. I eat very bland and plain foods. I don't want to take antidepressents, although I did try at one point and as for all the other acid reflux meds. tried them, didn't work.

Thanks for your help

Are you eating a lot of fruits or high acid vegetables by chance?

No, I'm not eating alot of fruit or veggies, in fact, I have a 1 small cup of applesauce per week, and my choice veggies is string beans. That's it. I'm very afraid of veggies and fruit because I have IBS. I've been chewing gaviscon tablets alot lately and I find that that is helping a little, but I notice that i get acid build-up if I'm hungry, so I'll grab something to eat and at late at nite - before I go to sleep - i also get alot of acid build-up. WhenI wake up in the morning, I have to eat breakfast right away or again the acid will build up in the back of my mouth.

Thanks so much for asking.

Melinda

It sounds like you have a very excitable acid producing system. If none of the prescription acid reflux medications help, then talk to your doctor and state your concerns about the antidepressants. As I said before, this may be a case where a drug typically diagnosed for depression has a secondary effect that makes it useful in this circumstance (such as slowing down the digestive response).
