Hi, I have been having quite a bit of pain in my chest into my back.  I have problems swollowing and it feels like I have a lump all the time. I have been on the lupus forum and the allergy asthma one too. But I had an email about how infectious esophogitis can cause major pain and problems if left untreated.
Has anyone had these symptoms?   I also have shortness of breath which the family doctor has said it could be heart. But has not persued sending me to a heart doc.  I had two stress tests done within the last three years and he keeps saying he thinks it's heart related, but doesn't do anything about it.  I have been told I have fibromyalgia and Possibly lupus.  I have been to the gastro doc. I had to insist on an endoscope and he would not do a colonoscopy, (yeah would not, I had one done in 2002 he says. and unless I am bleeding he won't do one.)  Anyway.  The endoscope showed I had esophogitis and after it was done, he said he doesn't need to see me back.  I have been on previcid for years.  But the pain has gotten so bad, I have pain in my chest into my back and am short of breath all the time.  yeah the gastro doc wouldn't do anything for me.  When he heard I have fibro and possibly lupus, he tuned me out and said that's not his field.    So I am going to another gastro doc this week. but I  don't know if I can wait that long.
But surely I am writing to that other doctor that if this one says something about the esophogitis and needs to put me on meds, I am surely going to do something about it. These doctors are getting away with too much.  I had written the gastro doc and asked him why he won't do a colonoscopy and he never wrote back.  So he will hear from me and maybe a lawyer about this.  I have been struggling with this pain for years now.

If anyone can share if they have this or had this PLEASE HELP.

Hi. What is infectious esophagitis? I haven't heard of it, unless it's h. pylori. Do you know if that is what is being discussed? You can do a search for h. pylori on this forum and will find out more from other posts. Briefly, there is a breath test that can be done to test if you have it and then a antibiotic can be prescribed. I don't know if has "cured" esophagitis in anyone, though. I just googled the term and there is an infectious esophagitis, but is uncommon with people with uncompromised immune systems. You may be more likely to have it since you may have lupus.

Since you have asthma you should also be aware that there is an allergic form of esophagitis called eosinophillic esophogitis. I suspect you don't have this - typically the endoscope indicates rings in the esophagus that can cause strictures and choking. Your doctor didn't mention it, so you probably don't have it. However, I mention it because you should be aware of all the possibilities. (As an aside, when we realized I had eosinophillic esophagitis, I went to an allergist who knew more about the treatments for the condition than my gastro doctor!)

I had silent / eosinophillic esophagitis for years. It was discovered due to strictures that caused a severe choking incident. In the last few years I started having classic GERD symptoms. I went to my regular doctor before my gastro doctor to make sure it wasn't my heart. I had an EKG done and it was normal. My doctor told me that if I'm feeling uncomfortable at a variety of times it's probably GERD. If it is most frequent after exercise, walking, etc., I should be more aggressive in checking my heart. (I don't want to give you medical advice, just telling you what my doctor told me.)

BTW, I have experienced the feeling of a lump when my GERD was bad. It can be from irritation in the esophagus. However, I never had problems swallowing except due to a stricture.

I suspect letters to your doctor would do no good -- too easy to toss or ignore. Face to face would be best. But going to a new doctor is even better. Do you have a specialist for lupus? You might want to mention the possiblility to that doctor as well. I was surprised when my allergist knew so much about the allergic variation of esophagitis. An immune specialist may know more about the infectious esophagitis than your gastro doctor.

Good luck.

Thank you mlp.

I have been to an allgery asthma doc and was passed off to the family doc and a pumonary doc.  With my symptoms, I have had the feeling of a constant lump for over a year and a half now.  My voice is hoarse and when I lay down at night on the left side, I can't seem to do the swollowing function while laying like that. so I sit up to swollow and then lay on my right side.  I also feel my heart really pumpin while laying on my left side.   I have had two stress tests in the last three years. And I don't trust that cadio doc eiher.  My family doc told me he had a patient who was 75 had a stress test, the cardio doc told him everything was good, that night he died of heart attack.  Another patient of the GP said he had a lady who was around 60, she had a stress done and same result, everything looks good and two weeks later she had a heart attack.  she lived though.  Sadly the GP keeps telling me he isn't ruling it out with me because of a family history of my sister having had strokes and a heart attack in her 50's and then a quintupal by pass, my mom also had strokes and a triple by pass at 70.   Along with colon problems with my other two sisters and my brother.  Two sisters had bowel resections done and the one had a precancerous polyp.  But yet the gastro doc will not do a colonoscopy till 2012 since I had one in 2002.  So I have an appt. this week with a new group. sadly there is only two groups here.  I know some people have to drive hours to get to one. so I should stop complaining about that.

Yes I do have a rheumy, but I have had two out of three positive results from the blood tests. She said she isn't convinced and I have asked her to test for some other things and she said no, i don't have enough symptoms for it. Even though I would have two or three.  I know they are only human, but in the mean time, my life is wasting away because of their pride to hang on to a patient who could be getting help from someone who will be persistant with checking.
