Everyone's GERD is caused by different situations and circumstances,  medications, illnesses, being overweight, hiatal hernias, overeating, to name a few.

I really believe that there isn't any one thing that can cure everyone.  Each one of us has to try different things to see what works.

I have posted all my information and all the supplements that I used and methods I tried - basically an alkaline diet and DGL licorice (which works like Zantac), sleeping exclusively on my left side (heart side), head/torso elevated - all this worked for me in one month to cure myself of GERD.

I understand that you also have to use your mind to will yourself to better health, you shouldn't need a book to tell you that.  I also understand how difficult that is when you don't feel well and not feeling well can make any one very discouraged.

But, you should use your mind and do research to find a way to better health for yourself.  Constantly changing drugs (unless extremely necessary for your health) is just not the way to be successful at healing yourself from GERD.

I wish everyone on this site good health in the future.  I will check back periodically if anyone has any questions for me.

If you do nothing else - SLEEP ON YOUR LEFT SIDE, the stomach acid won't back up into your esophagus.

Hi DANIE, Happy New Year.

Congratulations on being free of GERD. I think that even if some people do EXACTLY what you have done, it might take them longer than a month to heal.  Our bodies are different and some of us may have GERD worse than you did.  Still, it is always encouraging to hear that someone actually got rid of the symptoms.  For, all too often all we hear is of people who never get better.

I am sleeping on my left side and with my head/torso elevated.  During the day I often belch, at night now I have flatulence and constipation (gross, but true).  I'm wondering if this is a good thing.  Maybe this is because the bed is elevated so the gas is no longer moving upward at night?

I bought DGL, it is the chewable kind.  I also try to eat a very alkaline diet.

Am I feeling better?  No...Do I have stress in my life right now?  No, not really...Therefore, I believe that my body may just be in bad shape now.  I am 34, slender, and have been told that I'm very pretty (I LOOK like I'm healthy, though obviously I am not).  One of the reasons I got GERD is due to not eating during a very stressful time.  The stress itself did NOT cause the GERD as if I had had the same stress but had eaten, I would not have gotten GERD.  I literally ate nothing for DAYS while in mourning.  I DO NOT have this stress now, but am suffering from the aftermath of malnourishment.

I do yoga, go out with friends, enjoy my life...But I still have trouble getting rid of GERD!

I will try to remain positive this New Year and hope to G-d that I will get better!

Friendlygal,
Hang in there. Keep up the alkaline diet ALL THE TIME and use the DGL licorice 20 minutes (dissolve very slowly in your mouth with saliva). It takes time, it took me a little over one month.
When you eat out, it can be difficult but at least make sure you do the DGL before you eat. It really does coat the esophagus and heals it. It definitely worked for me.
Wishing you good health this year.
For constipation, try using the new Benefiber, it's excellent. Check with your doctor though if you have any other problems. It is a natural product and non gritty like some others and does not actually cause constipation if you don't drink tons of water with it.

Danie,

I know you have replied in some of my previous threads.  I do not recall.  Did you have any throat symptoms? I thought the DGL licorice only treated they symptoms of reflux and did not cure the disorder.

What dosage of DGL licorice did you use (mg, and times per day)?   What brand did you use?

friendlygal,

if your symptoms are there to distract you from pain in your subconscious, then no mix of home remedies is going to cure you. Your mind will continue to find symptoms to bother you, to get you to micro-manage your life around the symptoms. It is a losing battle, I think. Try focusing on what is "eating at you." Our bodies are tough and can handle sleeping on either side, etc. You have already stated that your GERD started during a tough time . . . explore that more and you may find a permanent cure. You say you are happy and enjoy your life, but something must be making you sad or angry. What is it? : )

Riverrotter,

I'm still baffled how you could cure GERD with your mind. I've read two of Sarno's books and would like to read about other people with GERD who were cured with his techniques. I can understand that maybe pain could be a mindbody thing but GERD is so different. I went through all his techniques, journaling and even breaking down into a crying session while I unloaded all my past baggage and I have alot of it. I thought why not give it a try and I really believed that it could be a mindbody thing. So I decided I would taper off the meds and bam, I had acid coming up so bad that I couldn't bare it so I had to get back on the meds again. I think that everytime a person has a flare up of acid that it just weakens the LES muscle more so I'm afraid to try it again. I really don't think that mine is a mindbody connection. I think you were an exception and I wonder whether you really had GERD in the first place. Any comments???

KLA,
I used 3 DGL tablets before each meal and basically ate small meals during the day, all alkaline. If you look back on my postings, everything I did is written in them. I had EXTREME nausea and definitely a knot in the throat feeling.

Riverrotter, I already posted that not all GERD is the same for everyone. I do believe that if diet and other resources alone do not help you, you can definitely incorporate your Sarno methods. BUT.....you have to understand that not everyone is going to respond to that method. I personally have had no anxiety about anything....my life is peaceful and calm and I still got GERD. I got it when I started using Advil (especially at night and going right to sleep) for pain management after a fall in my apt, and sleeping exclusively on my right side for almost 2 months.

You are basically saying that it's all in your mind....well for many of us it's not in our mind. So.....let me conclude with this....let everyone try everything they want to try and see what works for them. You have definitely made your point.

Hi everyone....I use to wake up choking during the middle of the night, as things would erupt, and temp block my wind pipe.  I took over the counter meds to help control the reflux, which did help, but did not take it away.  I always had heartburn, which was nasty, and that would occur at any time of the day.

Final I went to the doctor about three years ago, and he gave me Prevacid.  Since then, I have not had any bouts of acid reflux, heartburn, or anything.  Once in awhile I will purposely not take the medication, and after a couple of days, I can feel the heartburn building, and then take a Prevacid - and it is gone right away.

So the Prevacid did take away my relfux/heartburn/etc.....the doctors contributed it to having a nervous stomach......

Have a great day,

Gary

Beau2006, lucky you that the prevacid works for you.  I've heard that it's a great drug that works for a lot of people.  Unfortunately, in my case my prevacid is not working...

I wil go to a new place with GIs on the 11th.  I'll see if it'll finally help me...
