Hi,

I don't have the minty taste all the time anymore, but I do feel it creeping into my gums sometimes and I know this is going to sound crazy, but, I think it's creeping into my nasal cavity and sometimes, my eyes are stinging. I feel like I'm in a horror movie. I hoping that it just creeps out the way it creep in. I have tried the akaline diet, but some of the foods give me that minty taste right away, like quinoa, really weird and dates.  For all of you that feel so frustrated - I can just say - I'm trying to live my life as normal as possible like if I didn't have these symptoms.

Speaking of the "girl" issue, I remember reading in Merck's Manual several years ago when I first learned about GERD, that mostly MALES got it. I think that many of us here are female. What does that say?

One theory I've had is that my parents' generation had less GERD because they had a more traditional lifestyle - more traditional roles, less divorce, more support from family and community. Less stress, basically. How many of us here are trying to do a lot on our own, with not a lot of support?

Since I posted this topic, It's strange but that minty taste isn't there at all lately. I do know that I have been putting alot of salt in my foods - also eating alot more veggies - white breast chicken, the other day I started the DGL Licorice in tablet form, because I couldn't chew it. I don't know why the sudden change - but I am happier for it. The biggest switch is that I am putting alot - and I mean alot more salt on my foods. I was not a salt eater at all. There was no salt on my home cooked meals and I never added it to anything. So, maybe that's part of it. And I am definetly working very hard to get rid of all the pent up emotions, anger, sadness and I'm keeping very busy. Not 100% there yet, but I am hoping for the best. And I hope everyone feels better too.

Whiskeygirl,

That is very good news; I'm very happy for you and hope it is a permanent "cure". Thank you for thinking of us. I am also a non-salt eater - just never think of it.

Hey whiskeygirl...

We have the same thing. Remember I told you that I didn't have mine all the time either? As far as the minty taste creeping into your gums, I know what you mean. I have the eye thing as well. I have it as I am writing. My eyes sting as if they have been exposed to something that would annoy them.

I don't know if you have had any blood drawn, but I can tell you that I have a high wbc. It's been like that since this whole thing started in June. Anyhow I did feel good for 1 week in september and during that period I had blood drawn. This is the only time my wbc was normal.

Do you have any other symptoms? Lets keep each other posted!

Hospitalized with Infectious Colitis.
Colonscopy showed ulcers.Diagnose changed to either UC or Crohn's
Whatever it is, I was told its mild...
Medication Asacol 1x3
Never had a good follow up - no small bowel test at all.
Gastroscopy was normal, but Still have a burning feeling in my stomach.
Looking for a doctor in Oslo who knows what he's doing atm.

PiaSava:

I can't believe you have the same symptoms in your gums and eyes. It's so weird - I feel like I'm in  a horror movie. When all these symptoms first started I had medical insurance and my blood tests were all normal. Even my endoscopy was normal. I kept on asking my doctor for motility tests and he claimed it wasn't necessary. I think they were necessary, but What I want isn't important. Anyway, I am taking care of it myself.  The only other symptom that is new is that there is a small section of my tongue on the right side that feels like it's burning almost like the acid is laying right there. Don't know how else to explain it. Besides adding alot of salt to my food, I have also added stevia, it's like a sugar sweetner. It's okay. I have it in my oatmeal everyday.  Have u tried it?

Hi WG...
I am actually glad that I found someone else with these symptoms. Maybe one of us will find out what is causing it! I've never tried stevia, cause it is not allowed in Norway, since they havent been able to document the effects of using it. I have however done alot of reading about it. I know they have been using it for years and years in Japan without any effects.

I had the burning tongue a while back, but my whole tongue was burning. I remember my gums were real swollen at the time as well. I kept taking the nexium and it passed.

I was wondering if you might have any other symptoms that I have. I'll just put a list of some of them here and then you can get back to me when you have time... I might have alot more going on then you, since I've been diagnosed with some kind of IBD as well.

Anyhow.. here we go:

-burning feeling in my stomach
-metalic taste in the back of my mouth (worse if I drink something sweet)
-Very tired all the time
- flu-like feeling
- pressure/sore throat
- elevated white blood count

PiaSava:

I have IBS- Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I think it's the same as IBD. no, on the burning feeling in stomach, but yes I did have that metallic taste for months and months especially when I drank water. I'm always tired but I think I need to start taking Vitamin B12. That seemed to help a long time ago. I do get a sore throat alot.I don't know what u mean by pressure, I don't have any blood problems.

So it definetly is not diet, although having a good diet may help you to overcome it.
You said your started after surgery riite? Could you have been unconciously stressed about the surgery? And you taking 2 PPI's and a H2 and you still feel the symptoms riite?

Its weird sometime I feel like some organism or organism is trying to crawl up to our face or something haha.

Anyways, hope you get well soon, keep me posted as to what you're doing and stuff. And good luck with your job search. I thinkk that employment would def help. I think being too biusy can cause it and not being busy enough, at least for me, when i'm stupidly bored. I think have more reflux. Good luck tho, meant htat.

I was stressed out after surgery, My surgery was on my bladder and after surgery I had a large hemotoma on my thigh, which caused me alot of pain for about 6 - 8 weeks. My recovery was supposed to be only 5-7 days. And after the surgery I started having trouble with food. My symptoms before were mild, just belching, repeating of foods. I had to deal with IBS as well. I told the doctors about my situation and so they put a tube down my throat with medication so that I wouldn't become sicker.  Personally, I think that the tube somehow affected my situation. Shortly, after the surgery is when I started getting that minty taste and it was 24/7 all the time - every second of the day up until very recently.  I went to the best NY City doctors and was put on every ppi possible, nothing helped with the exception of ativan - anti-axiety only for 3 weeks then it all came back. Now, Between diet, therapy and trying to stay focused, I am feeling somewhat better. It's not 24/7 anymore, I still have moments, but they dissapear.

You're right, I do feel like something's creeping up all through my throat and mouth and ears. It's weird.

How are your symptoms, are they everyday or just here and there.

Used to be off and on and than daily after I was diagnosed and put on an acid reducer? Sometime I kind of wished I never was diagnosed. HAHA.
I have hope. And you should have hope too. Don;t worry about if the surgery did damge or not. The body is amzingly strong and can heal itself. STress has more a factor than anything. That's what I think. Its easy to say, but just forget everything, stay occupied, relax. Seriously, the one common denominator I find with everyone who has LPR or GERD, is that its started with a stressful even or a culmination of stressful events. Keep strong. Keep me posted and good luck. I think for some reason it def is a ny thing., I know so many peeps in NY who have it. Let me know how you're doing.
