Hi Friends,
I have had heartburn pretty much my whole life.  The last few years was the worse for me.  I controlled it pretty well with prilosec otc for a few years, but gradually that didnt seem to help me anymore.
I started getting a cough, then the hoarseness, the reflux when I would lay down or bend down, constant burping, the lovely "lump" in throat feeling, and eventually pain in my back between my shoulderblaids which finally made me go to the Dr.
I have been taking protonix  now for 2.5 months.  I have changed my lifestyle, and eliminated spicey foods, tomatoes which are a killer for me, caffeine, carbonated soft drinks...etc etc....
I am feeling better most days...I would say that my symptoms have decreased about 75%, to a point where I can say it is bareable, and somedays pretty good.  But, I am still not "normal".  I understand that this is a chronic condition...but I am wondering if I will ever feel normal again.  Is this about the best that I will feel, or will it take longer than the 2.5 months of medication.??
Sometimes this gets so depressing!  I just want my life back!

Hi Rose. I'm glad you've gotten yourself to the point where you're feeling 75% feeling better. I think if you try alkalizing your diet and use digestive enzymes with your meals, you may notice an even bigger improvement. Get yourself a pH kit from the drugstore and check your urine's pH to see where it's at. Chances are your body's probably too acidic and that will contribute to alot of the problems you're having. I know, because since I've managed to keep my pH normalized my symptoms have gone to barely recognizable these days. Regarding the "lovely" lump in the throat. Don't be surprised if that one stays around a while even after most of your other symptoms have subsided. I still get that if I eat something my body objects to or even if I'm feeling stressed. My TCM doc says stress and anxiety have alot to do with it. If you realize that, then you can almost soothe yourself out of some of those unpleasant incidents. I just tell myself to calm down and let it pass...then focus on something else...and it almost always works.
I'm sure you'll get other advice, too, but this is mine and it works for me. It can get very depressing, but if we put our minds and efforts into it...we will get our lives back. We can make ourselves feel "normal" again...I believe that, and so should you. Good luck!

You're very welcome, Rose. You can get digestive enzymes at just about any health food store. They come in capsules so are easy to take and transport around with you. You take 1 or 2 (see recommendations on bottle) just before you eat. Just swallow with a little water.  They help your stomach process the food, making it easier for the body to digest and utilize nutrients. There's tons of brands of enzymes out there. Initially I'd recommend buying a better brand to start with. Just ask the sales person for help. Then later once your symptoms begin to calm down and improve, you can move on to a more economical brand of enzymes. The ones I'm using right now are really expensive, but they work so much better than the cheaper ones at this time...I know cuz I've tried switching, and it did make a difference. I'll save the  el' cheapo enzymes for when I'm back in tip-top form. Hope this helps.

I am using this enzyme.  Someone told me they took it for one month and their reflux went away.  I am takeing 4 before every meal. I plan on taking it for 6 months.
