Hey everyone! HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Anyway Im new here and I think I have GERD. Im taking prilosec and it seems to help but Im still having problems, I have burning in my stomache that goes around to my back, and burning in my chest, neck and back of head, I also belch constantly. I also have jaw and ear pain and sometimes pain in my arms. I havent been to the doctor yet or had any tests done. I also have shortness of breath 24/7. before I was on prilosec I had chest pains and chest tightness and the burning was alot worse. Is there anything I can do about my breathing??? And what can I do about the burning?? Also my throat has been red and nasty looking for about a month, even after taking antibiotics but I dont feel acid coming up in my throat so it couldnt be acid irritating it, could it?? about an hour ago I ate a a sonic bacon cheesburger and Im really paying for it right now. I have no idea what to eat or drink to make this go away. I just wish the burning and shortness of breath would go away but I have no idea what to do. By the way, Im 18 and female. Thanks for reading and if you have any advice that would be greatxxxxxxMUCH LOVExxxxxxx

Hi Victoria88,

Yes, you do have the classic symptoms of GERD. I have experienced all of this plus the ear pain. If the Prilosec is working somewhat, then you may have GERD. These meds don't always work 24/7 like they say. The most I've ever gotten out of them is 16 hours before I started feeling pain again. Sometimes you won't feel the acid coming up, but if you have a red tongue or a burning tongue, then it's probably acid. The first sypmtom of heartburn is pain after eating something like a burger, so I would say to get to a doctor to have a few tests to see what's going on. This will give you peace of mind...not knowing is worse.

To get some relief for now if your throat is raw, get some aloe vera gel at the health store and drink a couple of swallows about 3 to 4 times a day. Drink Ginger tea for relief also. Try combining it with camomile tea..it is more palatable. There is also Orange Peel Extract at the health store which helps me alot. At bedtime, try to elevate your head and torso with pillows to keep the acid down and sleep only on your left side, this keeps your stomach lower than your esophagus. I'm afraid burgers are out for a while, try eating a more bland or alkaline diet, alot of veges and fruits, no coffee, tea, cola, alcohol for awhile until you improve. Also, chewing gum relieves acid because your saliva is alkaline. There is also DGL licorice which soothes the esophagus and acts like a natural antacid. All these remedies have worked for me at different times.

Hope this has helped you. Good luck. Sillylilly

Try some of these and see if they help

Hi..Sure sounds like GERD to me...Gaviscon liquid and magnesium tablets (not taken at the same time) have been helpful to me.  Also, just like Sillylilly said, watch every bite that goes in your mouth...plain chicken breast, vegtables and fruit have been good for me.  Every person is different, don't be discouraged when something sets of your stomach..just write down what it was and remember to stay away from it.  Keep reading this forum because there are lots of folks that have got some great advice.  Lots of water also is helpful to me...
Take Care of you and Good luck!

Food or drink coming back to visit when you burp is totally normal!  And I have to say it sure doesn't taste better the second time around LOL!  I find that the heavier the meal the worse the return, I have had my best luck eating 6 or more meals a day that are really light.  Also, have you tried any digestive enzymes, I just started taking them after bigger meals and they have been pretty helpful (so far).   Anyway..take care and best of luck! TT

Hi everyone. This is my first time here. Before I saw my Dr.,I tried a variety of OTC products for what I thought was heartburn. When nothing helped, I went to my Dr. He gave me Nexium to take once a day for 2 wks. He said it would only take 2 wks. to heal my stomach. 2 wks. later I had to see him again, as the burning in the back of my nose & throat was worse. He prescribed 3 more wks. of Nexium and also said to see a gastrointerologist. If the pain went away before the gastro appt. then to just cancel the appt. He was so sure the Nexium would help.It helped some, but I still had the burning in my throat. I have had my bed elevated, been on a bland diet, chewed a ton of gum, taken papaya pills(recommended by a heartburn sufferer). The only relief I get is to not eat at all. My GI appt. is 1/10/07. Does anyone here know what happens at this appt.? My Dr.just said to make an appt. with a GI Dr. & I was so sick with this I didn't ask what happens. Now I'm afraid.  Also, has anyone ever heard of  Reflux Remedy Website or tried the 3 secret ingredients found in your kitchen, to cure GERD? Does it work?

Sillylilly: where do you get DGL licorice? What is an alkaline diet? Thanks
