http://www.drugs.com/prevacid.html

You should always check out drugs before you take them to see if you are taking them correctly, side effects etc.

Of course there are side effects to all of them!!! Check this site for prevacid, definitely constipation is one of them.

It's strange that it lists constipation as a side effect that is not serious. We must extract toxins from our body. Failure to do so for an extended period of time can lead to death!

Yes, yes , yes, it constipates. When I try to get off of it for a few days, I have a BM but when I start it again, I get constipated.

Interesting, sillylilly. I think I was actually constipated even before I tried prevacid. that's why, for me, it was hard to know...

It's strange. The first time I was on prevacid, I was not constipated. The second time I went on it, I also had my gall bladder removed. They say it's normal to have diarrhea-like experiences for a while after the surgery, but that never happened to me. In fact, it was quite the opposite. I'd never had a constipation problem in my life until I had that surgery.

1.5 years later, I still tend to experience constipation if I don't drink tons of water and make a point to exercise daily. It's worse sometimes than it is others, but for some reason I never considered that the Prevacid could be contributing to it. I'm not too concerned. Water and exercise is good for me, anyway, right? Being forced to do those things might be a blessing in disguise.

debaser, as long as you have found a solution to the constipation (water and exercise seem to work for you), then I wouldn't be worried.

I go many days without any BM.  So mine is a serious problem.  But now I am thinking that I need to exercise more.  I'll try that!

Friendly,
You must be miserable if you wait for several days. I always had problems with constipation before Prevacid but witih probiotics, senna and water, I was going every other day. But now with the Prevacid, it has gotten alot worse. my doc had to give me Zelnorm because I would go for days without going and that just isn't good. I also walked everyday about 30 minutes and ate alot of fiber, veges and fruit, so this is really important to keep things moving.

Senna is a natural herbal laxative. I get the natural one called Swiss Kriss tablets at the health store. It works very gentlly but works well.

sillylilly, thanks for that info.  something that works gently is best.  if i can keep from taking strong meds for this, that'd be better... if you know what i mean...

Many days? Ouch.

I've only done that a few times, after surgery. It was not a picnic. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the replies. I've stopped taking Previcid, and I've been prescribed w/ Miralax. It works pretty well usually, except that I still have to strain sometimes. But now that I'm off Prevacid, I have heartburn again. It's like I've traded one problem for another. What should I do?

I think you are slightly overstating your info about senna. If it violently stimulated my intestine, I would have diarrhea uncontrollable but it gently stimulates and gives nice soft formed stools, not diarrhea.

And one other thing. For many of us who have chronic constipation, it is because we have IBS with constipation, which causes our nerves to malfunction. Just eating the right fiber and foods that normal people eat doesn't solve our problem. Please try to understand that we have to take stronger measures than people with normal gut function. We would love to just eat the right thing and have it work right but it doesn't happen very often.

Very easy solution for constipation. Get a inexpensive bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar for 3 or 4 dollars. It will last you 2 months or more depending on how much you use.

Take two tablespoons of ACV in a glass and mix it with water about half a glass of water or fill it all the way to the top to dilute it as much as you like. Drink it down. After that fill up another glass of water and first rinse your mouth a little to clean the ACV taste and with the rest drink it down as well. Brush your teeth. You can do this first thing in the morning when you get up.

Repeat this procedure three times a day and even it out in the morning, noon and at night time. The ACV should start to produce some healthy bowel movements in a couple days. I take it daily and I am going daily daily on 5 out of 7 days during the week. Keep a chart for this. Mark down date and time.

Before the ACV I was going maybe once every 6 days or so. It was really getting bad. ACV at least for me has been a savior in terms of bowel movement and totally cutting out my chest pains. I also take DGL. I have been taking the DGL Licorice for a little over a month now and my voice is almost back to normal.

Danie, I'll never forget your little information that saved me one desperate lonely painful night. Thank you. Sleeping on the left side and DGL were absolutely critical and the final piece for my recovery. Keep preaching to these people the wonders of DGL Danie. Most are not listening I can tell but eventually it will sink in and they'll drop those prescription meds that only mask the problem. DGL repairs and solves problems for good. I feel like a million bucks compared to a month ago.

RD,
Great to hear you are doing so well, I will keep posting.  I can see people are not taking the DGL for a long enough time for it to work.

Wishing you continued good health.

I would love to take the DGL but after taking for 4 months I began to develop headaches from it so gave it up. I have tried going back to it and taking one dose will produce a headache for me. I evidently became allergic to it. I have been on the alkaline diet for almost 4 months. I still have chronic acid reflux if I get off the medicine. I think for mild cases of GERD, the alkaline diet might be a cure but it's not going to heal my weak spinchter muscle. But, Danie, you have helped alot of people and I appreciate your zeal so keep working on those who can be helped.

Indersonu,

Are you saying that PPI's like Nexium can damage nerves....nobody has said that before. Are your doctors confirming that it caused nerve damage? I will try the colace as you suggested.

Thanks,
Sillylilly

I went to the doctor today for constipation, and she said that the Prevacid probably didn't cause constipation.

I had to have a blood test to check my thyroid for hypothyroidism, because after about 3 weeks on Miralax, I became constipated again. If my thyroid is fine, then I have to see a gastrointologist. (sp?)

indersonu, getting out bowel manually does not sound like fun!

I was off of prevacid today and yesterday and I actually went BM today!! And it was easy to go, too!! So maybe it really was prevacid that caused my constipation!

I don't understand why PPI's are suppose to constipate you...that would only exacerbate GERD because you don't want your system slowing down like that when you have acid reflux...you want food to leave the stomach asap if you can. My doctor told me that bile can actually back up into your stomach if you are constipated and the bile can actually reflux up also.

sillylilly, thanks so much for that info. about bile refluxing up.  Because it made me realize that that might be my problem as well.

yeah, PPIs are just not the best drugs to take, though they are the only ones that are out there (except for the natural ones, etc.)...

I'm going to go to my Primary doctor on Monday. I will talk to her about the constipation I have and I want to ask her what she says about the possibility about bile refluxing up.  I'll let you know what she says!
