My doctor says I have bile reflux and not acid reflux.  If this is due to problems with the esophogal sphincter (sic), why doesn't acid come up as well as bile?  It makes no sense.

My only symtom is difficulty swallowing and bad taste in my mouth.  I have been taking DGL licorice for 3 weeks and my throat seems to be getting better.

That's a good question. Did your doctor actually test you to see what is coming up...how would he know otherwise. It seems that both might be coming up.

It seems from what I read on this site that many people with LPR get relief from the DGL...so I hope you still keep doing good. ... Sillylilly

I don't get any relief from the DGL.  Am I the only one?  I have throat problems as well as everything else...

FG:

I am taking 3 tablets 4x a day and allowing them to dissolve in my mouth. I am not chewing them.  The DGL needs to disolve with saliva in order to work.

kevinla, even on Dr. Weil's site it says to chew them so I really don't get why they need to be dissolved.  Doesn't chewing create saliva? Mine won't dissolve, unless of course maybe if i try to keep them in my mouth for an hour or more (they are very hard).

I don't take them 4 times a day so thanks for the suggestion.  When are you taking them?

1/2 hour before I eat and before I go to bed.  Chewing and swallowing them will not be as effective as chewing some and sucking on them like candy.  I know it doesn't taste good, but I have gotten used it.  I almost quit after chewing on them 1 time because the taste is so bad.  I actually look forward to it sometimes. I keep telling myself that it is helping me.

KLA,
Keep it up with the DGL and you are definitely doing it correctly.  That is how I took them and I cured myself.

Friendlygal,
You should try the DGL again.  I don't think that you tried it for a long enough time.  Remember, it took ONE MONTH for me to heal and I only had GERD symptoms for ONE MONTH before that!!
If you want to chew them, put one at a time in your mouth and chew until it's very very small and then swallow.  Don't just chew and swallow, that will not coat the esophagus.
What brand are you taking?  The ones I got from Puritan Pride were dissolvable in the mouth with saliva.  Maybe you should change brands.

PS At first I was taking only 1 or 2 at a time but then went to 3 when I didn't seem to get better. That's when I had the breakthru. I guess I needed more. I took them before eating ANYTHING, and basically had 3 meals a day. In between, even if I had something to snack on, I took them too.
They are definitely a MUST before going to bed, but remember not to drink anything afterwards. Let them soothe the esophagus overnight.

DANIE, I am still taking them.  I never stopped taking them.  They just haven't helped me yet.  When you say not to drink anything afterward, it makes me think well what if your meal is soup? Is soup ok even though it is liquid?

RE DGL: I have used it in the past and it seems to have helped.

I'm having a flareup of acid or bile reflux (I have not figured out which yet) mainly throat pain. I started taking a 2x dose of PPIs last week, and my symptoms are even worse  - which I don't understand.  So I've started DGL also. Has anyone experienced worsening after PPI's and not had bile reflux?

A caution about DGL: My doc is a little skeptical about its safety, mainly becasue when people use to eat a lot of the non-extracted licroce, it lead to kidney failure.  I know dr. Weil says its pretty safe, but you really have to trust the manufacturer.  Also dr. Weil says to stop taking it after (if) symptoms improve.

Hi,
I tried using the DGL for a while, first I was taking tiny capsules which I would just swallow. Didn't really feel my esophagus would benefit from that so I tried the DGL chewable tablets and after a couple of days I noticed they were making me feel nauseous and a little dizzy so I stopped taking them and those symptoms went away.
Has anybody else experienced this?
