This has been something that's plagued me for a long time: do you sometimes have trouble telling the difference between being hungry and being sick to your stomach? I don't know if this is GERD-related or anxiety-related, but I'm told by the doctor that these two conditions feed off one another. Sometimes I'll feel this way and I'll eat something...next thing you know I feel much better. Another time I'll do the same thing and I'll get even sicker. I've tried to time my meals to prevent confusion, but it doesn't always work. I get hungry-sick now and then when I shouldn't be hungry (at the moment, for example...I just ate a small lunch 3.5 hours ago and shouldn't be hungry again so soon).

Another thing (and this is kind of gross): do you ever get sickish to your stomach after having a bowel movement? I usually do if the stools are loose. If I was slightly constipated or "normal", I don't usually feel anything. I'm guessing this is my anxiety disorder playing tricks on me. Why would a bowel movement cause a person to get sick AFTERWARDS? Doesn't make sense to me, but then again, what do I know?

Just wondering if GERD sufferers (or anyone, really) have experienced the same things. If so, was it GERD? Was it something else? I can't ask people I know in real life -- they'd just think I'm nuts.

Thanks,
D

debaser,

If I am REALLY hungry, I sometimes feel nauseous. My stomach sort of gets hungry then nauseous then hungry then nauseous again. Perhaps with GERD, when one is hungry, it's the acid in their empty stomach that is making them feel nauseous??? Just a guess. My 6 year old son sometimes also says his belly hurts when he is actually hungry. I'm thinking that in general, when we get hungry, our stomachs might cramp a bit, just as our stomachs might cramp after we use the bathroom. Perhaps that is what you are feeling?

No, it's not a cramp, although some muscles in my abdomen do stiffen up. Really, I'm pretty sure it's distension that's causing both the nausea and the feeling that my abdominal muscles are flexing slightly.

I've been having this problem in a very big way today. I woke up like this and even called in sick at work. I ate a little...enough that it normally calms my stomach. It didn't work so I didn't eat any more. Then I started feeling a bit better for a while before it hit me again.

I've also had a couple of odd BM's today. I have no idea what's going on.
