Hi all,

I've been suffering from pretty bad acid reflux for about a year now (I'm just about to turn 21). I'm currently studying abroad for 6 months in Australia, but before I left my doctor said I should look into getting Fundoplication surgery when I get back to the states, otherwise I'm stuck on Prevacid the rest of my life. I was wondering if anyone has any experience or has actually gotten this surgery. I'm only 21 and this seems like a pretty big deal to me, but the doctor said when I lay down there is acid covering almost all of my esophagus. Just wanted to know what you all thought of this, and I dont like the statistic posted on this website: http://www.mayoclinic.org/gerd/refluxsurgery.html "The risk of death after this operation is less than one in 500."

So just overall I'm scared to go back home and have to deal with this issue, and wanted to know what you guys think.

Hi;  I've been looking at the surgery also,  and the people I've talked to about it are all glad they did it, because it relieves a lot of their problems and pain.  Some still take meds, but a much smaller dose.

I haven't decided either, but I've felt so bad the last couple days I'd do it tomorrow if it would make this go away!  On other days, I'm in no rush.

The surgery is done (most of the time) by  laparscopy, which is so much easier to get through than a regular incision.  I've had five surgeries that way, so I can speak with experience.

Just make sure you end up with a surgeon that has a lot of experience with this procedure.

Hi Lokk,

I've read about many people who have had the surgery successfully, especially younger people.  Sorry, you have to go through this at such a young age...it sucks!  My grandson has it at 8 months old.

I'm not sure if I can tell you about another site, but here goes:  www.heartburn-help.com.  Under Forums, scroll down to Nissen Fundoplication and you will find alot of people who have had the surgery recently.

I personally know two people, older than you, who had the surgery successfully, one going on 5 years and the other going on 10 years.  They are very happy they did it.  At your age, a lifetime of these drugs isn't appealing.   All the best to you...
