........not over anything in particular :-)

I seem to be producing huge quantities of saliva at the moment. Being a hypochrondriac I daren't google it, so thought I'd ask here. Could this be linked to GERD? (may seem like a weird question, but seem to remember saliva is the first part of the digestive process or something?)

Will probably settle down, but for the past few hours I've been producing gallons of the stuff - it's really weird!

Chris711,

Are you on any medication and might 'hypersalivation' be one of the side effects?

Since you are self proclaimed hypochondriac, I went ahead and did some research for you. It seems that excessive salivea is a common symptom of GERD. I've not had that symptom and it doesn't sound like fun. I'm wondering how many others have experienced the same thing.

Oh, I've had it. It's weird and annoying. Even though it's gross, spit it out instead of swallowing it.

It's nothing that will hurt you...it's just another one of those really odd GERD symptoms.

Nope, I'm strictly medication free.

Thanks Tummytuck. Was more curious than worried, but thought if I looked in to it I'd be able to find some sort of (highly unlikely) horrible disease that might produced that symptom!!

It's just a bit weird rather than a big problem - any way I can combat it (drink more/less or chew something maybe? ...just a thought)

On a different note, I'm a little confused at the classification of GERD and acid reflux. Am I right in thinking GERD is the overall condition and acid reflux is a seperate thing that can occur as a result?

Dear Chris 711,
Absolutely, excess saliva is a sign of Gerd.  When Gerd was as its worse for me, I had tons of saliva and I always had to keep swallowing to try and keep the acid out of my throat.  Also, if you have to keep clearing your throat (like if you have lots of phleym) that too is a sign of Gerd probably LPR.  Good luck,  Porcelain Doll....

It seems to come and go, although I've not noticed it so much at all lately.

What is slightly weird is it seems to be mostly on the right side of my mouth, it almost feels a little like I'm dribbling on that side (don't think I am, think it's just the saliva moistening the inside of my mouth around there.....) and the paranoid hypochondriac in me occasionally gets a little worked up about this eyes

I do tend to get quite hoarse in the mornings and a while back (when the heartburn first kicked in) I  have a tickly cough sensation in my throat that would come and go too. All normal GERD stuff I believe. Only thing is, you hear a lot about people going to ER with (what turns out to be) GERD chest pains and although mine were a little worrying becuase of where in my chest they occured, they were never that painful *touch wood*.
