Hi Tummy Tuck:  You had mentioned on another posting you had taken the DGL.  I was wondering how long you took it?  I have been on it for about 3 days and I am not sure it is helping.  It is the worst thing I have ever tasted but if it helps I will continue taking it.  Also, how many times did you take it?  I am taking two chewables 20 minutes before lunch and supper.  I have heard so many good things about DGL and aloe vera because they are supposed to be a natural anti inflammatory.  I did try the aloe vera but the one I purchased had citric acid and it was a problem.  I would like to know more about DGL.  I am thinking of quitting my Nexium because I am also getting acid breakthrough and my stomach feels awful but I am scared it will come back "rebound effect."

When you were on the Nexium like when you woke up in the morning did your stomach feel normal until you took the Nexium?  In the morning I am ok until I take the Nexium and then a while later is when the discomfort starts (hope my question makes sense)?
Thanks, Porcelain Doll......

Just a follow up to my post:  I did try to stop the Nexium for about one day trying to experiment and it was a disaster.  I went to our health store and purchased probiotics, enzymes, and some other stuff for my stomach.  I am not skeptical about the stuff I purchased but think it is too soon and haven't healed yet.  That night I had horrible and I can not stress horrible enough acid breakthrough.  I am back on my Nexium and hopefully maybe in a month or two I can try the natural therapy.  I hope one day to get off the PPI because I really need my calcium absorption since I have the beginning of osteoporosis.  Porcelain Doll Maker.....

Porcelain doll,

When I stopped taking nexium cold turkey, I only had rebound acid for about a day and a half. After that, I felt much better. I took the DGL pretty faithfully for about a week and then stopped. I didn't notice any difference between when I take it and when I don't take it. I started the aloe vera juice right away as well. The DGL I could stomach. The aloe vera is the worst thing I have ever tasted. But, it seems to work for me. At this point, I only take a few Tums a day and drink the aloe vera somewhat faithfully ( af ew ounces in the morning and a few ounces at night) and I am doing pretty well. I get a little acid every day but I can control it with Tums or Mylanta. I feel much better than I did when I was taking the ppi's. They just didn't work for me.

There is a person on this board named DANIE who swears by the DGL. She (I think it's a she) took it for a few months, I think, and felt much better in about 4 weeks. I'm sure you can find her posts on this forum. She said she felt awful for about a month but since the ppi's didn't work for her, she kept using the DGL. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful but DANIE is really the person to ask about it. She swears it actually cured her GERD.

Like you, I would feel fine when I woke up in the morning but about 30 minutes or so after I took the nexium, the burn would start.

Have you had an endoscopy? If so, what did it show?

Tummytuck thanks for getting back to me!!! I did ask Danie a question about the DGL because I am wondering if she took it along with the PPI.  I am barely starting to feel better after over 4 months of hell.  I did have an endoscopy and the Gastro Dr. said I had really bad acid reflux (thank God no Barrett's, no H Pylori bacteria, or no Hiatal Hernia).  I even had my gallbladder checked along with lots of blood work. I am deligently watching my diet and still on the double dose of Nexium 40 mg a day.  I really worry because I know I am not absorbing calcium and already have the beginning of osteoporosis.  I have tried the apple cider vinegar with the mother and it was a total disaster.  I could feel the acid rising up like I wanted to choke.  I don't know why it caused more acid since I do know ACV has an alkaline effect?  I am trying the DGL but don't see it is helping much perhaps because I am still taking my PPI.  I am glad to know I am not the only one feeling the same when I take the Nexium first thing in the morning.  I did not take it one morning and by 5:30 pm I had so much acid I had to take it just so I could have dinner and haven't stopped since.  I really want to try a natural alternative and know Dr. Weil advocates the use of DGL but I think I am not ready to leave my PPI.  I did try the aloe vera but the one I purchased had citric acid and I didn't do very good with it.  I asked my Gastro about DGL, Mastica Gum (alternative treatments) and said he had no comment.  Many of these doctors don't believe in the holistic approach.

I am glad to hear you were cured of your Gerd.  Now that you are better with your Gerd are you still having to watch your diet?  I haven't had anything good to eat in over 4 months (by good I mean Mexican/Italian food).  I have gotten to the point that as long as I felt good I could give up all of those foods.  I have given up everything on the no-no list.  I guess at my age of 43 I have already had a lifetime of junk, pizza, fast food.... but I really miss going to Olive Garden oh well no use bellyaching......Porcelain Doll Maker....
