I was diagnosed about 2 years ago.  I'm not bothered with heart burn but rather a constant need to clear my throat it is very annoying.  Some days I just can't leave the house.  I'm on medication but it does nothing!!!  I also have to belch allot.  Has anyone ever heard of the clearing of the throat?

Thanks Avalon mad

Hi Avalon,

Yeah, I have it, it's a new symptom, I've had it about 2 weeks now.
Do you have a sore throat also? Its strange cause I also noticed nasal drip and phlegm build up.
As soon as I get rid of one symptom , another comes right along.
Anyhow, I try not to clear my throat too much, I also chew gum, it helps keep the mouth entertained and my mind off of the throat clearing.
Good Luck, Hope you feel better.

There are some days my voice gets very weak!!  I have had sore throats also.  I try not to clear my throat but it is almost impossible.  I hear stress adds to this and I'm very high strung so I'm sure that doesn't help.  I get very frustrated because there really is not meds. for this that I know of.  I'm on a PPI but it does nothing for the throat clearing...Thanks for the relpy and good luck to you also.

Avalon,

When you say your voice gets weak, do you mean you get hoarse?  If so, that is most likely caused by your GERD and that makes me wonder if your PPI is working for you.

I have asthma and allergies and I clear my throat a lot because of those two things.  I don't clear my throat nearly as much as I used to since I had my esophagus and a hiatal hernia repaired. I still have to take Nexium.  I wouldn't advise you to go to the extreme measure of surgery unless you really have to.  My asthma came on with a vengeance in 2002 and is quite severe.  The GERD was triggering some of my asthma attacks.

I wish I could be of more help.

Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Thanks Carla,

I have been on every PPI on the market nothing seems to work.  I'm pretty sure it is related to my gerd because it only starts when I eat or drink.  I think PPI is good for heatburn but it does not relieve this symtom.  I agree about surgery I will only do it as a last resort.  My throat clearing has become so bad some days I don't leave the house because people stare at me.

Thanks for your imput

I have the need to clear my throat all the time. This is common with GERD? I am still trying to figure things out. I dont' know if I have GERD, but I do know I have plenty of the symptoms. My voice is also hoarse a lot. Is that common with GERD?

Thanks all.

I use to clear my throat alot and was prescribed Losec. It has been wonderful. I believe that my 10 year old twins have GERD as well but the specialist they have recently seen believes it's a bad habit and has suggested that they see a Hypnotist. Will let you know how that goes in a couple of months. They have also been on different medications which do not completly get rid of the throat clearing.

Same thing here.  Been going on for about a month now.  I also have some tenderness in the neck (along the left side mid-to-jaw).  I was originally diagnosed with Chronic sinus infection but now they're thinking it is a worsening of GERD.

Hi Sara,

I wrote down Losec and will ask my doctor about it in July at my next appointment.  What exactly is it do you know?  I'm willing to try anything at this point.  This is really affecting my life at this point, I really don't like to go out if it is a real bad day.  It is almost like on a bad day that I'm having spasms I just can't stop.  Thanks for the info

Update:

Results for Fridays Appt: nasal drip , phlegm ball in throat(at least thats what it feels like too me) constant clearing of the throat and sore throat.

I was told I have allergies and now on Nasonex. I have to admit this stuff is kickng some serious phlegm ball butt.

Tho, I do believe it is a worsening of "THE GERD".

Hi Leo,
Wow!  Same thing here.  I went to the doctor Thursday.  She said I have a lot of nasal drip, phelgm ball, clearing throat, coughing and fluid in each ear.  She put me on another round of antibiotics and AlleRX.  I am going to see the Gastroenterlogist next week because the GERD appears to be getting worse.

You  have any kind of nasal drip ? and if NOT? I would still ask Doc about it possibly having to due with sinuses.

I notice that the throat clearing started first , eventually turned into (what felt like a head cold) but turned out to be allergies, so... the Doc thinks for now.

Or, I know for me if I eat large portions, the throat clearing gets really bad.

I havent qiute figured this part out but its excessive(saliva, mucous) accumulating in the throat and seems to get stuck there, along with the nasal drip problem? I believe both play a part in this for me.

Anyways, maybe it'll give you some idea

Hi Leo,
I think you are on to something.  My doctor said that sinus problems (nasal drip) will drain into the throat resulting in the feeling of something being stuck there and the need to constantly clear the throat.  She also said that allergies are a primary culprit in the nasal drip.  The constant nasal drip (I have year round allergies) goes into my stomach which treats it as food and creates more acid.  The drainage into the stomach can cause or further inflame any gastritis already present and result in acid reflux.  The goal in my case is to get the nasal drip under control and then hopefully the GERD will respond accordingly.  --Marburg

I have gerd. I clear my throat all the time and I would say that it my worst symptom. It feels like I have something stuck in my throat and I need to clear it out. My doctor says that there is a muscle in your throat that relaxes if you have gerd, that causes that feeling. I don't think it will ever go away since I have had it for over 5 years.

That sounds bad...

Even if its very small meals at a time?

Anywho, he might be eating too much at one sitting. And even though it doesnt seem like much , it still is.

Maybe try softer foods? OR, cutting his already small portions down to tiny portions.

I have the same problem, its weird eh?

I'm still working on it, myself. Maybe ask Doc for a different PPI, see if that helps?

 Good Luck!

I have the same thing!  I have been having trouble with my throat, feeling like there was something stuck in it.  I would start eating and not be able to finish because I felt like my food was not going down.  I have had pain on the right side of my stomach.  I don't dare chew gum anymore because it burns the back of my throat.  I belch a lot, my stomach feels like it itches inside sometimes, and throughout the day my mouth gets so dry.  I finally went to the Dr. yesterday and he gave me Prilosec.  I do feel better, but he said it will take about a month to heal since the acid in my stomach has burnt my esophagus. He did say he wasn't going to rule stomach cancer out but to come back if this Prilosec doesn't fix me in a month.

I have anxiety issues on top of all of this that I've been dealing with for 10 years, so this surely doesn't help me!

I have this throat clearing problem also. Mine has been going on for 8 years. It is worse when:

1. whenever I am hungry
2. at night time when laying down - I clear my throat for 15 minutes
3. after eating too much (anytime of the day)

Its in my vocal area and affects my voice.

Sometimes when I try to get the phlem out of my vocal cords I go into a coughing fit where I start having spasms from my stomach upwards, and these turn into hicups. I can be quite a site to see. It freaks people out. I guess its laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Avalon, I have this also, some days worse than others, but I always thought it was due to post nasal drip?
