I know many have the GERD/LPR issues, but there are a huge variety of them ... insights or possible alternative treatments that worked with similar symptoms described below will be much appreciated.

- 35 year old
- Male
- No coffee, very light recreational drinker, do smoking for a long period a time (1 pack a day at the worst ... now reduced to 5-7)
- Was heavy meat eater ... now eating a more balanced diet and having vegies like a rabbit

- Never felt any sympton until Jan of 2007 ... otherwise perfectly healthy
- Very minor or no heart burn, but feeling of throat burning sensation and something stuck in my throat throughout the day
- No major coughing but occasional clearing of throat produced sticky mucus with brownish content (possibly due to stomach acid), which reduced the feeling of burning and lump sensation

- Diagnosed for GERD in April and subsequently went through Endo
- Doctor said there was a stomach infection of some sort and prescribed antibiotics and prilosec for 2 weeks
- Doctor again prescribed 2 months of Prilosec for 20mg, twice a day after I complainted the persistence of the symptoms
- Now am in the week 4 of taking Prilosec and it is not going anywhere
- Symptoms seens at their worst around meal time (before and after). Always wake up in the morning with throat burning pretty bad.
- Subsequent symptoms now include dry/tight throat, loss of voice easily, tight chest
- No cutting back on diet but trying healthier combination

One thing I tried in the last two days which seems REALLY helped my throat after I read several web posts: honey mixed with warm water.  It reduced the throat burning and lump sensation considerably although it does not help get ride of it yet ... wondering if the honey helped stomach or just produced a protective coating around throat.  I will keep on doing it for the next couple weeks and keep you posted if it works.

Really don't like Vinegar in general, so have not tried Apple Cide Vinegar as many suggested.

Have another endo and an additional PH monitoring coming up in several weeks, but really do not give it too much hope now.

Really hate the idea that need to take PPI for a long period of time. The only thing my primary doctor coudl tell me now is to quit the smoking.  While I agree it may be a good thing to do in general, I seriously doubt it was the cause.

Thanks friendlygal for the reply. They said it is very dangerous to have acid in the throat. That is the reason why I am desperately trying to reduce it if not cured. Felt like I am running against time before the acid takes its toll.

I don't know if it is the drug or the honey or the combination of both, but somehow it is getting a little bit better after I tried honey.

Tried ACV this weekend too ... ouch it hurts ... felt like a knife getting through my throat. Gave it up right after the half glass of diluted ACV mixed with honey. Maybe it will work, but it hurts more than it cures. It sounds this thing cures the heartburn, but I have a silent LPR, so I don't have a heartburn to begin with.

As I mentioned before, the symptoms improved since I took mixed homey and water drinks ... start eating Apple and Yogurt as many suggested in other posts ... one thing I tried, which may be also beneficial is the fiber, I am taking 2 spoons everyday. I guess it helps the digestive system in general anyway, so it got be good for me.

Now I have minor throat irritation and slight feeling of something stuck in my throat ... still it persists throughout the day and bothers me. I am sticking to the prescription and taking 2 prilosec a day (40mg in total).

The tricky thing is I don't know how long ago I start developing this symptoms. Maybe it has been with me for a while but I don't know it is the GERD/LPR until the symptoms became a lot worse. I heard once the stomach has health issues, it will take a long while to heal. So I am watching my diet and keep up with my good behavors and hope it won't take years to get rid of this thing.

How could this thing happen? I think I am still at the stage of the denial.

Hi

I am 27 year old male, I use to have occasional heart burn and then started having excsessive belching after meals. I started taking Aciphex since June 2006 and was referred to a Gastrologist in Feb 2007. After I met Gastrologist, on his advise I made a lot of life style changes such as quit smoking, coffee, carbonated drinks and all acidic food completely. The GI did a endoscopy and said that nothings wrong and there was no definite reflux sysmptoms too. After that I stopped having heart burn but got a sore throat since March 2007. I feel like there is a lump in my throat and some thing is struck, with hoarseness and dryness in the morning. I wenty to a ENT and he said the acid was coming in to my throat which is causing these problems. I started sleeping on a slanted bed and dont sleep until 3 hrs after dinner. Even after extensive changes to my diet and life style I still have problem in my throat and belching after meals but no heart burn. Can anyone who had similar problems advise on how to over come this problem. Thanks.

Dear JJJQQQ,
Do you perhaps have a sinus infection that is draining back into your throat during the night? It's the brown in the mucous that makes me ask the question?

Thanks Catherine.

It is indeed possible this is due to a sinus infection although my doctors didn't mention anything related to this ... as I indicated early, I had both an Endoscope previously as well as a throat examination by a Head & Neck doctor.

The symptoms are not only happen in the morning.  My throat becomes irritated throughout the day, particularly around the meal times.  I have been on Prilosec twice a day, and it seems help in some ways.  I think I forgot to take the morning pill today, and now my throat burns bad in the entire morning with brownish mucus.

On top of that, my nose seems functioning normal.  No symptoms of any nose problem so far.  But I will definitely suggest that to my doc to see if anything comes out of it.

My other scheduled Endoscope and PH monitoring is coming up next week, so it will tell for sure if this is related to GERD or something else.

Ray (from the other post) seems to have the similar one as I do.  Really have not found anything too useful yet besides to reduce the symptoms by take honey mix and Prilosec every day.

I am 6.1 and 174 lbs ... really don't have any over-weight, eating disorder, or stomach problems before, so this puzzles me.

Hi, Ive had reflux since last fall. I too have the lump in throat feeling. I also get backaches and spasms in my esophagus from time to time. I have been on protonix since late august of last year. I watch my diet, and have eliminated carbonated drinks, and caffeine. However, i do occassionally have a cup of coffee...maybe twice a week now. But I went along time without any. My symptoms have subsided quite a bit from when I first went to the dr, however I am never totally symptom free. At my best, I have a few hours where I can forget I have this thing. On good days, my symptoms are mild. Im aware of them, but I can live with it. On bad days, and yes, I still have them from time to time, and Im not sure if its from eatting something i shouldnt have, or if this just happens by itself, I feel crappy, but never as bad as I did when this first came on. I dont know if this will ever totally go away. I have noticed that stress makes it worse. I get spasms in my esophagus from time to time, which is like a squeezing feeling...and stress definatley makes this symptom appear.

HI! I'm having the same problems that all of you have. My doctor treated me for a sinsus infection & that didn't work, so he sent me to an ENT specialist and he sent me to an allergy clinic. Well, they think I have what is called "silent reflux". It happens during the night. The mucus gets up in my throat and causes me to have so much mucus in the mornimg. They put me on Nexium and it took 8 weeks for it to kick in. Well I started having heartburn, a terrible dry mouth, I even felt confused. I stopped taking the Nexium about a week ago. I really had a rebound, but I'm better now. I'm really starting to watch my diet and take a Zantac when needed. If I continue to have problems, I think I'll ask my doctor about an endoscope. I'm afraid to take one as I panic. Going to try the honey. I hope everyone is doing better. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!

I'm in Japan where there is an unfortunate communication problem.... I've been gradually loosing my voice over the last 6 months and not had known why. My job basicaly involves speaking so it's been difficult and it was thought it was overuse but I don't really talk quite that much I think. One of the many ENTs I've been to figures its GERD but after reading Dr. Hazenfields article, I seem to have a combo of it and LPR. I don't have heartburn although I did have some years ago. I have what feels to be a lump in the back of my throat, definite hoarseness and loss of voice, asthma, and slight problems swallowing. I went on Asthma meds too and they killed my voice really quickly.

Anyhow, after being diagnosed with GErd, got given Pariet and Transamin which didn't do much for me but once I added in elevating my bed, stopped lying down and watching TV after eating, my symptoms (voice) improved greatly. However, I have a big setback, and this probably kicked off my problem. One of my favorite things to do was to go downtown Osaka and did a HUGE thai lunch and walk around for a while. Big time acid reflux. And, I had a little setback, (its only been a week and a half since I elevated my bed etc. I had a little Thai at home and although it wasn't a huge meal, I had the same walking reflux issues.... and sure enough, my voice got a little worse for the last couple of days.

Any suggestions? I know I have to avoid Thai and large meals etc.... Should I get checked out for a hiatial hernia? I also have noticed that i beltch quite a bit....

Any suggestions are appreciated! It's essential I get my voice back 100%.
