Hi,
My doctor order a test "Modified Barium Swallow Test" for me. I am wondering if anyone have done this test before. How it is like? I have difficulty swallow and can I swallow the barium? I also have couple of times of esophagus spasm and I am wondering if I swallow barium will it cause esophagus spasm?
Thank you very much in advanced for your help!

this post is old but I am going to reply anyway.

The modified barium swallow test is basically a test where they take X RAYS of your mouth, throat, esophagus while you eat food covered with barium.

For my test I ate :
1) a drink of barium
2) soft fruits with barium
3) cookie with barium

It is the best test (I believe) for someone who has trouble swallowing because they will see exactly what happens when you swallow.
I dont know about the esophagus spams (you may need to have manometry for this) but the best thing is to express your concern to the person who is going to do the test. It was a speech pathologist and a radiology technician in my case.

This test is really easy. I had the traditionnal barium swallow test before and I HATED it because I had to swallow this whole glass full of barium... awful! For the MBS test it was less disgusting.

Sorry, I didn't realize what that test was called.  I also had it a couple of years ago before I had my esophagus and hiatal hernia repair.  I had soft scrambled eggs and toast with just a tiny little cup of water to drink.  There was nothing uncomfortable about the test at all.
