Hello everyone,
I am new to this particular forum, but do participate in the ms and crohn's forums. I am asking this question on behalf of my daughter who is now 5 months pregnant and is having so much heartburn. She has an apt. with her ob/gyn on July 10th....has tried to get an earlier apt. but he booked until then. Is rolaids or tums safe to take during pregnancy....what about over the counter ranitidine. ? She has not been sleeping as this keeps her up all night....could anyone suggest an alternative or homeopathic remedy for her until she can see the doctor. ?

Hi Marie-Claire,

Rolaids and Tums are perfectly acceptable, and in may cases warranted, when you're pregnant.  Tums, at least, also serves as a calcium supplement, so it can only help a pregnancy.  I know when I was pregnant, the acid reflux and heartburn was intolerable; I eventually started taking OTC zantac/rantidine.  It's classifed as a B drug, which means it is safe for pregnancy.  I wouldn't recommend that your daughter just take it, though, until she runs it by her OB.  My GI doctor told me after the pregnancy, that it would have been perfectly fine to take a PPI during pregnancy, but again that is something that would need to be cleared by an OB.  I'm sure there are natural and herbal supplements that your daughter can take as well, but I was always hesitant to take those supplements during pregnancy because they don't really have much research on them (which is why they're not FDA regulated).

Thank you El,
I thought ranitidine might be ok. but I will wait until we see the doctor and will ask him about it. For now the tums and rolaids aren't doing a very good job.
