Hey Guys

I'm over from the MS board, but was recently dx'd with GERD and Barrett's Esophagus. My question is how common is it to have GERD with little or no symptoms?? I understand that BE is a result of long term exposure of the esophagus to stomach acids (GERD), but that indicates long term GERD. I only recently started having heartburn..and certainly nothing i'd have gne to see a doc about. I was actually dx'd with this after complaining of choking all the time...food literally stops in my chest and just won't go anywhere. It's as if my throat has forgotten how to advance it. In time...some 5 mins maybe...it'll begin to move, but it's extremely painful. Since dx, i've tried Prilosec which didn't help the heartburn. Now i'm using Aciphex and that seems to help the heartburn, but now i'm being nauseated more often. My doc feels if this med doesn't help, she'll want to do some sort of test whereby a 'thing' is implanted in my throat and i wear this monitor on my hip to read acid levels? Any input or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

Hi there, rhondab!

I am worried that I might get Barret's, after reading your post.  Because I have trouble swallowing and food gets stopped in my chest as well. :((

How did they find out you have barret's?  Endoscopy??

The PH testing is what you are referring to.  I had it done.  You record when you burp and cough and your PH level is tested...

Hey Friendlygal!

Actually i only began having heartburn just weeks before this test was done. I was having lots of diahrea tho with much blood. After a colon test left me with only IBS to answer for the blood, i was at a loss. In the mean time...since i was going to be at the doc's office for follow-up on that test...i decided to bring up this choking and just check to see what the doc may feel i need to do...not ever suspecting anything at all. She suggested i have an Endoscopy..and was rather insistant about it. I had it and was dx'd with GERD, Hiatial Hernia, Ulcers and Barrett's Esophagus. WHEW!! WHAT?? So now i'm taking that med i listed above and that's all as of now. As for the choking...that was explained in the GERD? The doc seemed to feel that was due to the GERD...but as i've read, u must have had GERD for a long time before it develops into BE. My choking feels like food just stops in my chest. No amt of swallowing or liquids will help. In fact it worsens it. It feels like i'm going to drown if i drink water or other liquids to try to move the food. U just hav to wait it out. Seems to be more painful over time...like it's getting worse. My doc did stretch my esophagus while doing the endoscopy, so if it'd been happening from a stricture that should've fixed it. In u'r case...i'd definitely call the doc about it and see what they say. If they don't suggest an endo, ask for it. I went in expecting NOTHING..look what they found.

Thanks for u'r reply! Does the ph testing hurt? I never burp, but cough a lot...guess that'll be interesting to try to keep up with!

Hi there, the PH testing that I did was the Bravo method for 48 hours. That is wireless.  It isn't supposed to hurt at all.  But for some it does.  For me, I felt pain every time I ate while the capsule was in me.  But, I just had them keep it in anyway.  I'm not sure why it hurt so much every time I ate.  Iheard the GI hinting something about me having IBS and that that is why it hurt.  But...don't worry about it!  It really is supposed to be nothing.

the other one is for 24 hours.  And for that one, you have something placed in your nose.  I can't comment on it because I didn't have it done.
