I am told that I have failed all drug therapy for GERD -- Nexium plus Zantac and Gaviscon are not controlling symptoms.  I tried other PPIs and they did not work.  The GI specialist suggests that I may be a surgery candidate if I have a hiatal hernia.  Endoscopies have not shown that I have one so he suggests a barium swallow test to look for a "slipping hiatal hernia".
I am having such a hard time now with GERD I am wondering if the barium test will make symptoms even worse.  Any experience with this?
Also, has anyone had surgery for GERD and what is that like?

Don't worry about the barium.  It shouldn't make your GERD worse.  Good luck!

I had an upper GI series where I had to drink the barium. Didn't hurt my GERD at all.
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003
