I have gastritis and I have been currently on Protonix 30MG once a day.

I ended up having a flare-up yesterday when I was with my g/f and got really bad heartburn.

It got bad that I had a weird throbbing in my wrist near my vein.

I know it's my pulse but it was going very weirdly, like I could see it pulse.

It's still pulsing but I can't see it anymore.

I have had a blood test saying I was tested Positive for H. Pylori, but when I got my endoscopy done he took a biopsy and the results came back negative and said that the only problem I had was mild chronic gastritis.

also wouldn't a endoscopy rule out stomach cancer or any infection like that?

I have lost 20 pounds in 2 months.

I have been stuck on 183 for like 3 weeks but when I get on the scale twice a day, the morning usually reads something like 181.8 and at night it's back at 183.9.

not only do I have this but I also get some stiff shoulder or some shoulder pains.

I noticed that when I went to the bathroom today I had little red spots in my stool but I had a stool test like a week ago and he said I was perfectly normal.

I told my mom about this and she said I most likely have a hemorrhoid or it was something I ate.

because I am not forcing it out but basically just letting it come out.

This is very stressful. I'm gonna end up turning into a hypochondriac.

Please someone help me out.

Sorry you are having troubles.

If you are having pain, then your blood pressure could be elevated due to your pain.  This could cause you to "see" the pulse in your wrist (or your neck, forehead, chest, etc.).

Biopsy of an inflammed area of the stomach is considered the standard for diagnosing H. pylori.  Your upper endoscopy would allow the GI doc to look at your stomach for all sorts of problems, including cancers, etc.  I would imagine that if you don't improve on your Protnoix dose, a different PPI may need trying.  If that still doesn't help, you might ask again about treatment for the H.pylori, which will involve at least a couple of antibiotics along with a PPI.

Could your weight loss be due to decreased oral intake, due to you fearing the pain that you have later - just a thought?

Blood in one's stool from gastritis 1) usually isn't very much (unless a bleeding ulcer develops), and 2) even if it was more than usual, would cause the stools to be dark and usually particularly smelling.  Blood from a hemorrhoid usually will "streak" one side of the stool, where the bleeding vein is located - one would also usually have frank blood on the toilet tissue - and pain with passing the stools (sometimes internal hemorrhoids don't hurth too much).

Blood from anywhere between the stomach (gastritis) to the rectum (hemorrhoid) is usually detected by the test you said you have - sometimes called a hemocult test.  This test is very senstiive, so if it is okay (no blood), then that is a good result.  Perhaps you would just monitor your stools and see if the red specs are still there - your mom could have been right about it just being something you ate.

Hope that helps.

thank you for your help.

to ohnurse:

about my weight loss, it could be because I cut back on my soda. which I used to have like 2 to 3 cans a day.
that and I stood away from junkfood.
and I eat healthy and have a lot of fiber.

about the blood: I went to the bathroom and even wiped and I didnt see anything anymore.

well. I didnt have a flare-up but now and then when I lay down, my stomach seems to pulse or throb.

i dont think i have an anyerisum, because this has been going on for a little while now.

I'm just afraid by it.

I have been feeling better maybe getting one flare-up a month and this pulsing just freaks me out.

Should I tell my G.I. doctor about this when I go see him in a month?

What exactly do you mean when you say you are having "pulsing" in your stomach - and how long has it been going on?

Is it a rhythmic "feeling" you are getting, or can other people see/feel it too?  If you press on your abdomen, just above the belly button, do you feel a pulsation that coincides with your heartbeat?

While some people with an aneurysm may sense a pulsation in their abdomen, there are other symptoms that usually accompany it.  Have you told any of you doctors about it?  If this is new, it is definately something to tell your doc about as soon as possible.  Abdominal aneurysms are more typical in older adult males who have high blood pressure, among other things, but they can theoretically happen in anyone.  You seem to think these feelings are related to your gastrointestinal problems, though.

it's been going on ever since I had the gastritis.

It's not something with my heartbeat. It just happens when I lie down or anything and it just goes away it's self.

as far as I know, not many people can see it unless I lift up my shirt and show them.

It doesn't hurt or anything.

I have showed one doctor this when I went to an E.R. for stomach pain.

he said it's probably the acid in your stomach causing it or the gastritis.

so he put me on Reglan a while back which I don't use anymore. but since I have been on the Protonix I rarely get the heartburn or stomach aches anymore.

It just depends on what I eat and when I do.

So maybe I should stop worrying?

ER docs have a high index of doing tests for things like aneurysms - they call it "defensive medicine" - which is medicine they practice to cover themselves if sued.  So, if the ER doc wasn't concerned, and it happened at the same time as the gastritis, then maybe you are on the right track with just checking with you doc again at your next appointment.

Have a good day - and worrying rarely helps anyone :-)

I would tell your GI doc about blood in your stool could be anything but you dont know. Until someone looks inside you with a colonsocpy they can never tell where the blood is coming from. Hemoroids could be the cause but you can't assume it some have died from colon cancer because this was assumed the source of the blood. I'm not saying you have cancer.

see, I would be afraid if I was still bleeding.

It has stop for 2 weeks now and when I go to the bathroom and wipe, I see no blood.

I know colon cancer is rare for my age, I'm only 20 but it's still a possiblity I guess.

but I have a new ?.

I used to be a huge sugar and caffeine addict.

I have stop that for the 3 months I had gastritis.

I notice alot of people telling me that I look thinner.

The only place I look thinner in is my arms and wrists.

could this be atrophy or something?

Or am I just losing weight because I cut down on the sweets?

Cutting out the sugar would certainly be helpful in loosing weight.  Sugar is 4 cal/gram.  So, add up how many grams of sugar you are not eating now compared with normal, multiply by 4, and that is the amount of calories you are saving by not eating as much carbohydrate (sugar).

Muscle atrophy is usually associated with noticeable weakness - and I don't know of it happening at the wrists.  You could certainly bring it up with your doctor, however.

ok thanks, I don't feel any weaker.

so maybe it's just me cutting out the sugar.

I'll still bring it up though.

all I have been eating and drinking basically is high fiber foods and Activia Yogurt and Green Tea.

It's been helping a lot.
