I want to know if there's anyone out there, or anyone you know who has had such a violent case of GERD and then gotten better.

I don't mean the people who just feel that they have it bad, I mean people who have had the PH studies done like me and had the doctors tell them that their GERD is terribly, terribly bad.

Because I'm scared that I'll never get better and I'm searching for some hope, for some light at the end of the tunnel.  My PH studies report says that my digestion is "dramatically abnormal" and this scares me.

My mother had terrible trouble w/ GERD, she went months w/ throwing up and not eating well, she was scared too, she thought she would never be o.k. again, She had a scope done and it turned up the worst grade 4 or whatever, Anyway it took a little while but she got better, She was so depressed it even took longer I believe, you have to stay positive, and try not to get down on yourself to much, You'll get through this and look back and say I was scared for nothing.

Not worst case, but it spontaneously vanished!

I have a suspicion it might have been related to 2 courses of antibiotics that I had, for a suspected cold (which really was a missed DX of GERD symptoms).

I had GERD for what seemed like forever.  Couldn't eat after 5 p.m.  Had the head of the bed raised, etc.  Have now had 11 endoscopies.  I asked my GI doctor for frequent flier miles!  For the last few years, I was breathing in the acid during sleep.  Talk about awful--I was taking 2 Nexiums a day.  This caused so much coughing, it felt like my toenails would be showing up in my mouth.  My GI gave me all sorts of tests and I asked about the fundoplication.  He didn't think it could be done and was sure I would be worse off.  I researched on the net and made an appt with a surgeon at a University teaching hospital.  He asked me what I wanted from surgery.  I told him I never wanted to taste or breathe acid again, wanted to be able to bend at the waist.  He said he could do that.  In Nov. 2005 I had a lap Toupet fundoplication.  A toupet only wraps 3/4 around and allows you to vomit, among other things.  Trust me..it does.  Had food poisoning in Holland and it all came up with no problem.  I had a hiatal hernia (50% + of stomach in chest cavity), which he repaired.  I have had NO acid outside my stomach since.  There is not a burping problem and surgery was not bad, except for the hospital's not being user friendly.  Two nights in, liquid and soft diet for total of one week and gently eased back into whatever.  He had redone another older woman who had had a Nissen and she was much happier with her Toupet.  I have been thrilled.  Do your research, find a really good surgeon and go for an evaluation.  It would appear that the Toupet avoids many of the problems of the Nissen. cool

DianeM, that's so great to hear that you're doing so much better! :)

Since I also have huge motility problems, they are telling me that the reflux operation would not help me at all.  I am refluxing from from esophagus as well, not just from my stomach.  So I have no idea what to do. :(

How does one "relux from the esophagus"? My GI thought I had motility problems, but I guess not enough to interfere with surgery. I take it you have consulted a surgeon who does lots of these procedures? If not, find one and at least get his/her opinion. I celebrate every Nov. 29! Good luck!
