Hello.  I have been reading for about an hour and some of the posts are scaring me.  I was put on Nexium 40mg once a day on Monday this week because of pain when swallowing and a burning sensation in my chest area.  My doctor (locum) said it was GERD and that this should fix me up pretty quick, but I have felt no real improvement.  Actually, it seems like eating is getting more difficult, or maybe - I am more afraid of causing the pain.  My question is --- can anyone tell me of a good story with this problem.  Do people actually get better pretty quickly.  Is Nexium my best option.  I realize all you can offer is your opinion, but I would appreciate any advice.
I am a 40 year old woman.  Good health and only 10-15 lbs overweight.  My diet is reasonably healthy.

Has doctor sent you for any tests, e.g., endoscopy. barium swallow?  If you are having trouble swallowing, he/she needs to check what is going on.  If you haven't had any of those tests, get a 2nd opinion.

best to change your diet.
no pepermint, high fat, vinigar, too much salt, et etc.
The longer you stay on nexuim the harder to get off.
also, I pull the capsules apart and put half into an empty capsule and only take 20 mg in the morning on an empty stomach and I do fine all day in just that.
I will ween off soon.

Ellienor,  I've reduced my Nexium to one 20 mg. capsule each morning and am doing okay too.  But how does one taper off from there?  Will you take 20 mg. every other day? And then what?  I
haven't weaned off any further because I didn't know how to quit. I'd like to know how you're planning to wean off the Nexium and what you'll take instead (if anything).
