Hi Everyone~

My son has an esophageal stricture and it has been such a long road for us. He has to go every week to have it stretched. After they stretch it, he usually has about one week of good eating. He can eat just baout anything. After 1 week, he has a hard time eating all over again. He complains of his stomach hurting shortly after swallowing something and then gags and throws up whatever he ate. It is such a scary situation. I feel so bad for him because you can tell he is so uncomfortable. I sm worried that they are going to have to streatch is esophagus every week for the rest of his life and he is only 2. If you can help with any advice or experiences please do share. I am losing hope.

Thanks!

kkgal1

p.s. He is on prevacid 3 x's a day. They are not sure exactly what caused the strictre, but his biopsies came back that he has reflux.

I have had a history of stricture issues for probably 10 years. I haven't had nearly the serious of your son but I do understand what he is going through.

Is it possible he has allergies? My diagnosis was changed from acid reflux to eosinophilic esophagitis last year. I do have reflux, but it doesn't seem the be causing the strictures. The ee causes strictures. There is apparently still research being done but they believe it is caused by allergies. There are treatments, including using a steroid inhaler like for asthma, which the patient tries to absorb into the mouth and esophagus rather than the lungs. I don't need one so I don't know all of the details. I was surprised when I went to the allergist and he knew more about the condition than my gastro doctor.

Good luck.

Yeah, maybe it is from food allergies.  Has he ever been checked for any?

Thank you so much for responding to my post! I am glad that SOMEONE has experienced the same thing as my son. You know allegies were brought up, but when they did the biopsies, nothing came back indicating an allergy. I think the Dr. dismissed it at that point. Do you guys think that a biopsy would be enough to determine an allergy? I am willing to get further testing if needed. I will keep you posted. Again, thanks for your response!

This entire issue is so complicated , i am so sorry you are dealing with this with your son. I would get at least three other opinions and options as to treat ment and try to get his esophegus to gently and slowly grow and open in a healtheir way.THER HAS TO BE ANOTHER OPTION!!
I have just had 5 years of hell, my brother alex died of throat cancer 5 years ago, many instantly believed it was from alchohol and smoking which i now and always have thought had a lot to do with it even though he was only 38 when diagnosed and healthy and not drinking or smoking for years before this sudden sore throat but many of us DO have food alergies and unbeknownst to us, reflux , I never really felt the symptoms except when pregnant. We drink sodas and eat way to many things that our bodies get really screwed up these days. My story is long so I will make it as short as possible. I came to this sight because I was desperate, I just got off of nexium after 5 years due to severe anemia, My brother died I was very depressed and stressed, I now believe that reflux comes and goes due to diet and stress, my second pregnancy has caused a slight hiatal hernia but STRESS and grief and tons of coffee really did me in. I had an amazing voice and occasionally struggled with polyps or nodules as many singers do we also struggle with reflux from pushing our diaphram and air up through our throats all this I found out in my travels with this, Anyway i went to the best throat guy in the nation because my brother had just died and I was hoarse and sore throat all of a sudden , my mom was so scared it was like the worst universal joke that i needed thraot surgery after my brothers ordeal. I have come to realize, ENT's and GIs are in an ego inthrusted war over this issue, This DR as I said is huge, 17 textbooks on all types of things about reflux and the GI track and the throat, he is also obbsessed with reflux has had surgery to fix his and takes nexuim on top of the fundoplication. (insane ) he has treated most famous singers many of which get a nissan fundoplication from his peers(fellow docs he works with) are they all in financil kahoots with hte pharmo companies to push these surgeries and nexium till the cows come home to get us all addicted to ppi's? Who the heck knows, but many singers like me and people like me come in and are told we have SEVERE erosion and have been on very large doses of nexium. He said myself and my brother had severe reflux all of our lives and that is what caused my brothers cancer, he scared me to DEATH and with his reputation i was puddy in his hands, he had a wonderful face and really seemded to care so much for me, he did two surgeries i got very sick after no immunitys to defnend me due to the massive amounts of nexium not allowing me to absorb ANYTHING and steriods which leave you very vulnerable as well, I got a horrrible virus and it was winter with snow, I coughed on my newly treated cords and like Julie andrews lost my singing voice forever. After a bit I can say I was chewing ice out of nowhere and my friends were like what are you doing?I was so depressed I didn't know i felt weak and crappy for the last 5 years, this doctor put me on 4 nexium a day and 300 milligrams of Zanatc a night he was setting me up for the Nissan fundoplication and I decied to see someone else because my mother cried and begged me she said it was such a serious surgery, she is a very against this type of stuff and wanted me to explore healthier methods that could work. I have read all of your comments on the gerd blogs, and had to tell my story, I went to a new Dr since then as well as 3 others and three endoscopies later a colonoscopy and one BRAVO to check my reflux as well as a 24 hour PH probe test, results come out to say i have mild or closer to hardly any reflux and they think that DR was insane and an idoit to have me on so much crap, I did have some erosion but nothing severe really probably from the hernia from the pregnancy, my throat is so sore , I am off the PPI's , I am having mad rebound right now and I get SO scared thinking, what if he was right ? But three other Dr.s say he is nuts, and one ent as well so what do you do with this?? I am going to order the potters acidosis and keep drinking licorice tea and throat coat and detox and papaya juice and aloe vera juice and stay away from the calcium chews like tums and heal my throat, I am taking Zantac at night, I got the Malox max as someone suggested, I will try the peppermint oregeno oil too. Hopefully as some one said i will return to something of a happer life. In closing i need to have faith that I can do this and not live in fear and heal with healthier methods because those ppi"s were going to kill me,they leave you suceptable to illnes and poor nutrtion that will lead to anemia and extremely low calcium leading to arthritus and no B vitams in our sytstem, it is a horrible cycle, as for such a young boy being sick like this, my girlfriends two boys were diagnosed with reflux as babies , many are and they CAN and DO grow out of it, there HAS to be a great Dr who can sort this out in a healthier way than that.
Looking back i needed to do vocal and speech therapy and homeopathic remedies and get off of the coffee and spicy foods while letting my body heal as well as the spirit, instead i was railroaded with fear and Dr's egos into years of confusion and illness.I need to get checked every other year and keep and eye on my body but I wish all of you the best and thank you for all the great suggestions and help.
Please forgive me for the length. I wish immense health to all of you.

In response to your question about whether you can determine if a biopsy is enough to find allergies. I suspect not, however, a biopsy can detect the number of eosinophills in the esophagus. Apparently the eosinophills is a type of white blood cell that actively promotes inflammation. (see http://www.medicinenet.com/eosinophilic_esophagitis/article.htm) I remember my gastro doctor said he detected the eosinophills in previous biopsies but didn't realize why they were there. The white blood cells are a symptom, not the cause, so I suppose there can be other reasons for them to be present. I suggest you ask your doctor. If he/she hasn't heard of it and won't do the research, find another.

Good luck.

I haven't been tested for allergies in general, but my naturopath took a blood sample and sent it to a lab to check for food allergies, came back positive for 24 diferent things, and i felt a lot better once I went on the elimination diet. Though my symptoms were not exactly as you described, it might be something else to consider...

Hi kkgal1:

I know this post is about 5 years old now, but I was wondering if you had an update? I just found your post while I was searching for information for my son. He has a very similar problem. He is able to swallow pureed foods and things that dissolve (crackers and cereal) but other finger foods come right back up. He recently had his esophagus stretched too.

Did you ever figure out what was causing your son's stricture? Has he had any effective treatments? I would love some advice.

Thanks!
