I was diagnosed with gastroparesis not that long ago...after a really bad flare up of GERD, which I have had for years.  My GERD got worse, I was put on 80 mgs of Nexium and I developed gp.  I read somewhere that you need a certain amount of acid in your stomach to keep the stomach moving to digest food.  Anyone aware of ppi's making/causing gp to get worse?

I tried backing off the Nexium to 40 mgs and my symptoms started up almost immediately, burning in the stomach and chest, lump in my throat, nausea, dizziness...absolutely terrible.  I had to start back up with the 80 mgs...anyone take something in addition to Nexium?

I weaned of the ppis and went to dgl .

I started on Pure Encapsulations:  DGL Plus.

Wow it really helps.
NOw i am only taking 1/3 nexuim per day in the am.
I have just a tad of symptoms,, but not bad.
( I had lpr really bad one year ago )

DGL works best when mixed with saliva.  so I break open these capsules and swish
it around in my mouth in between meals and at bed time. Followe with some warm water.
If it tasts bad to you, I suggest you do it anyway.

2 nights ago I took 10 mg of pepcid too....but not often.

Yes you can get off the ppis, there is hope.
I used to take 2 per day too.
Just do it slowly and watch your diet.
dont eat large meals either.
eat 4 times per day.

Also for gastroparesis:

start your meals with something warm, like several sips of warm water, milk or what ever.
Never eat cold food, drinks, nor ice cream.
Cold food locks your stomach up. Very bad for us.

eat smaller meals, and walk slowly after a meal to get the stomach moving a bit.

There are herbs that aid digestion, such as dandelion herb.
I get the liquid herbs and put a squirt into my chamamile tea.  Just do a little at first.

Do abdomine massage to get the stomach moving.  Start out light in large circles.
Pull down from the sternum a bit too.
Eat easy to digest foods and chew chew chew.
Do a search for this.

Avoid white sugar at all costs.

Eat something live at each meal, but dont over do it.
You need the enzymes that are in live food to digest.
BUT DO NOT eat too much raw food either - it is too hard to digest.

I mean , just eat say a few slices of cucumber, a very small salad, some raw parsley,
or a slice of raw tomatoe ( fresh tomatoe are alkaline  - but never eat tomatoe sauce - acid).

Take extra digestive enzymes for the health store.
Get some Natruns Healthy Trinity or drink Kefir.

hope this helps.

Is it safe to take dgl plus be on Nexium?  If I am taking 80 mgs now, what do you recommend I start with? How many dgl pills a day, etc?

here is what I did.
I got some empty gel caps at the health store.

I gently opened my nexuim cap and gently emptied 1/2 of the contents into a gel cap.
Now I have 2 - 20 mg. capsules of nexium.

I then stated taking one of these ( 20 mg ) in the am, 30 -45 minutes before any food with a half  or full glass of warm water.

I would eat breakfast say at 8:30.
Then at about 11:00 am I empty one of the dgl caps in my mouth and swish around reall good then swallow.

Then I eat lunch at say noon.

Then at 2 or so do another dgl.  Have a snack.
Then take the other nexium 1/2 hour before dinner ( stomach must be fairly empty ) .

eat dinner 30 minutes later or 45 minutes later.

Then do the dgl again before bed.

That is how I got myself off of  80 mgs per day.

eg

OH, sometimes I do the dgl in the middle of the night or early morning at say 5 am too., then go back to bed ( I dont sleep well ) .
The dgl works best on an empty stomach.  It heals the stomach lining and alkalizes the throat and stomach.

oh, another thing you can do is get some gavistion tablets.
Before bed, disolve one tablet in about 5 -6 tablespooons of water.
If you wake up and your throat burns, first drink about 1/2 glass of room temp.  water.

Then swallow some of this mixture and go back to bed.
This helped heal my throat.
Water is good to drink at night, but never cold water.
