Long story:

2+ years ago---I had an endoscopy done b/c my primary MD thought my 'sore throat' problems were b/c of GERD.  The GI Guy (we'll call him #1)--found a spot on the outside of my esphogus---and directed me to another GI Guy (we'll call him #2) to get an endoscopic ultrasound (#1 didn't want to biopsy it b/c he didn't want me to hemmorrhage)---#2 said that it was a watery cyst---that moved out of the way---so, it wasn't a "problem"......(these guys were NOT in the same practice).....

I wasn't too impressed with Guy #1---he didn't really want to take the time to answer my ??s, like:  what do you do during the procedure, will I be sedated, what if I get pains afterward, side effects, etc....  he kind of brushed them off--told us (me and DH) that it was no big deal procedure, and moved on.  When I was coming out of it--he tried to explain it to me (in a fog) what he found---and when DH started asking him ??s, told DH to ask the nurse, he had to go.....(so, this is why I was/am NOT comfortable to seeing #1 again)

Today:  I have been having problems for about 4 months with pains in my stomach/sternum/back.......  First they thought it was my gall bladder (pain most on right side--except sternum)---after an ultrasound and hid-a-scan---tests were negative.  Then, they thought I had some back problems, so I went to PT, but it didn't get better.  My health insurance blessed an MRI--so, I got one of my mid-back (where the pain is)---and it came back negative.

Well--my MD thinks I may have given myself an ulcer b/c the pain in my sternum/back area was so bad--I lost 12 lbs in a 3 weeks--couldn't eat, sleep, pain, etc..., so he put me on prilosec---didn't work---put me on aciphex---and wrote me a referral for a GI guy in the same practice (we'll call him #3)  as GI Guy #1, just not #1 guy......

Well, I called to make an appt with guy #3.......but, the office told me b/c I already saw a GI Guy #1-----#1 has to sign off that it's OK to see #3.  A "formality", as they say.

So, after a week of waiting to hear back (and in pain)---I called them back---they told me that ALL 10 (that's 10) GI specialists in this particular office  REFUSED to see me---NO REASON GIVEN!!!!  I asked why, they said, no reason.

Now, I am trying to find another GI specialist about this problem, and when they ask if I have ever seen a GI specialist before, and I say, "yes..." they tell me that they usually won't take patients who have seen other GI specialists prior!  What the heck?

So, I am pounding the pavement trying to find someone who will SEE ME----about these problems---

So, I am wondering---has anyone have this happen to them before?  It's not like I had major surgery or anything.......just an endoscopy---no bad results....  I have an insurance plan that I will get charged for "out of networK"---but, if most of these dudes/dudettes won't see me b/c of  some "thing"-----What should I do?

(sorry so long winded).....  confused

That is absolutely ridiculous!!!  Do you think it has anything to do with your insurance?  I don't know what your situation is, but can you travel...maybe you would find a doc that would be willing to treat you like at Mayo or something???

I am sorry you have to go through this.  I have seen so many docs and GI's, and they all seem to think something different, but each and every time I went in, I just would say up front that I wanted a second opinion.  Maybe all of these docs know about you and are talking....my suggestion, find a doc that you think might know all the GI's you have seen.

It shouldn't be because of my insurance---it's pretty good---The only thing is----I have insurance with the "in network' and "out of network"---which I would have to pay if I go to someone out of network---and don't get the "OK" from my insurance company (unless it's an emergency).

I can't imagine these doctors would have anything to talk about me-----it was a routine endoscopy---no totally unusual findings the last time---and, DH and I were very pleasant (even coming off of the stuff they gave me)----when meeting with GI GUY #1---

the only thing I can think, is: did I ask TOO MANY ??s? I mean---I don't believe in too many questions, but, some Ego-MDs don't like to be questioned---so, maybe I just had bad luck-----I took questions out of some books I read (listed above)----just so I didn't get freaked out about it......

thanks for your comment----I'm a little afraid to say 2nd opinion b/c the last time I had tests done was about 2.5 years ago?

SIGH--this is so frustrating.........;(

anyone else!?

I feel for you because I too had upper GI done, and was told the problems on the outpatient forms, and do special diet and take 2 40mg nexium every 12 hours for
2 months. It said make a follow up appointment after 2 months of treatment. So
I called up to try make appointment for a follow up, and they refused to make another
appointment. I am thinking about complaining to the american medical association
about this GI doc and or sue him. America has crappy medical care!!!! confused

that is so strange JohnS....it doesn't appear you have any serious problems with your upper GI either!

So much for "patient rights"?
