Hi all!
I was Dx with GERD last year when I had an EGD.
Will GERD cause a bad taste in your mouth and make you really thirsty at times?

Hi there Shelly!

Well, to answer your question, yes, a bad taste in your mouth can be caused from GERD, infact, it is one of the main symptoms often listed.

I have never personally heard anything about being thirsty all the time. That could be possibly from meds you take, or just your body needing hydrating. For example, have you been throwing up, or having diahrea lately? Dehydration will cause excessive thirst. There are several medical conditions that cause thirst as well, for example, diabetes. Is that something that may be worth looking into for you?

I hope I have answered your question, please, keep posting!!

By the way, do you mind if I ask, what meds are you on? They could also be contributiing to the bad taste in your mouth, and the excessive thirst issues.

Again, keep us posted!

Hi!

Thanks for giving me some insight!

I am not on any meds.

I have had diarrhea/loose stools for about a year & a half now.  My GI specialist said that I have IBS-D.  (My hair is also shedding REALLY bad.) (It stinks!)  I have had tons of tests....EGD, colonoscopy, CT scans, ultrasounds, etc.

I don't have have symptoms of diabetes other than thirst.  I have had blood panels, CBC, etc. and nothing indicated diabetes.  I also was recently pregnant and had a baby in July.  My gestational diabetes test came back negative, so I'm guessing if I don't have diabetes while I'm pregnant, then I don't have it when I'm not pregnant...right??

My GI specialist said that I do have GERD.  He saw it on the EGD.  Do you have any other helpful information about GERD??

Thanks!

Shelly :-)

Hello again Shelly.

First of all, CONGRATS on the new addition to your family! Babies are great! And your baby is getting to the age of total amazement where he/she will start learning so many new and exciting things. How wonderful!!!

Since you are not on any meds, I'd be willing to guaruntee that the bad taste in your mouth does infact come from the GERD. I know the taste, and it can be unpleasant. I am not sure if there is any way to eliminate that annoying part of GERD all together, but I do have some thoughts on ways to TRY to minimize it...

I know you said you are not on meds for your GERD, but some OTC meds for heartburn may help you.

Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day.

Taking smaller bites, and chewing slowly when you are eating.

Take a little rest after your meals.

Changes in your diet...avoiding things like chocolate, caffeine, spicy food, things like that, that will trigger heartburn and or indegestion.

So, those are just a few things you can do to try to help control your GERD, along with the bad taste in your mouth. I am not promising they will work, but in my opinion, it's worth it to try anything to get relief!!

As for you being diabetic...based on what you told me, I'd say your chances of being diabetic are pretty low. If you ever want more information on that, feel free to take a gander over to the diabetes forum, and they could help you on that more than I can. But yea, I don't think it's too likely that that is your problem. Maybe your excessive thirst is coincedence, or who knows, maybe it does have to do with your GERD.

I am glad I have been able to help you out some. Feel free to look at old posts to see if they can help you out with anything else, or if you need to, ask away. I will do my best to asnwer, and hopefully others will be along to give answers as well.

Wishing you all the best!
