Hey there bok.  In doing some research on this surgery, I have come up with 3 surgeries being perfomed in the US and none of them were in New York.  One was in Portland Oregon, and the other 2 were in Columbus Ohio.

I haven't been able to find anything about cost either.  If you would like to email me, I can give you more specific information about all of this.

Thanks hun, and I wish you the best!

The Esophyx procedure costs $11,000 in New York and $15,000 to 19,000 in Oregon (OHSU).  I went thru the procedure last week in OHSU.

JohnDo, I am thinking about having the EsophyX. How much discomfort are you in now from the surgery and is it effective so far? Thank you for any insights.

Hi Lady39,

This is my 8th day after Esophyx, and I am still having left shoulder pain and abdominal cramping. The shoulder pain is worse. It was assumed from phrenic nerve irritation, and should resolve in a week, but mine haven't...don't know why. The recovery is not as easy as I have thought.  I am still on meds right now, same dose as before exophyx. When I try to cut the dose in half right after the procedure, I still get heartbrun. The doc told me to wait for a few weeks before I can say for sure if I still have reflux.  He is confident that the new valve he repaired is strong. I hope he is right. I will find out in 1 week whether this procedure works.  I took 12 days off work.  There is no way I can go back to work in less than 1 week.

Where are you getting your procedure done. How bad was your reflux? Do you have hiatal hernia? How long have you had it. Are you recommended for Nissen fundoplication?

Hi John. I have been on Nexium for a few years. I am a candidate for the Nissen but am reluctant to have the surgery due to the possibly serious side effects and the fact that it is not a guaranteed cure. I have read quite a bit about the EsophyX and am considering it. That being said, it is still a new surgery so I am trying to get info from people who have had it. I'm sorry about the shoulder pain ... hopefully that will subside soon. I am surprised by your prolonged recovery as they tout a quick recovery as one of the benefits of a transoral surgery. I have read on other boards that some doctors recommend staying on a ppi for several weeks after the surgery to give the valve time to strengthen and heal properly. Did your dr. not suggest that? Thank you for your posts on your recovery. I will look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Lady39

I am 2 1/2 weeks to post esophyX, the shoulder pain has resolved but boy, the reflux returns and is worse then pre surgery, even my pre surgery meds is not controlling the symptom anymore.  Yesterday and today, I got pretty bad heartburn, but my doctor doesn't want to do anything until 1 month has past. He will not even let me take nexium. He only put me on pepcid 40mg bid.  My reflux is worse when I sit down or lie down. Standing up makes me feel better.  But I can't stand up all day. I don't think this surgery is working at all. Each day I get more and more heartburn. If anything it makes it worse as of right now. Hopefully things change after a month. I suggest you to talk to more people about it and please let me know if somebody has successful outcome.

Hey All,

John was last online 12/29/2007 which is going on 2 years ago.  Perhaps he is still reading and may respond.

Smiles,

Kitt
