I am supposed to get an Upper GI and a Colonoscopy on 11/16 (finally)----to see what the heck is going on with my GI tract!  Well-----(sorry if I offend anyone)---I am looking at my calendar---and that's around the time I am supposed to get my period!  WWAAAAAHHH!!!  Will they still do the colonoscopy?

I have been waiting SIX MONTHS to find out about these stinkin' pains----and now this!  SIGH!!!  I am so upset!  Tell me they will still do it!  eyes sad    mad    nono

Well....I'm not a doc, but I say they'll still do it, you can't be the first person this has happened too. I say let them know, if you start - put in a tampon, and away you go!! Just think, if you are prone to cramping the medication they give you for those tests should make your day much nicer :)

I have had numerous coloscopies and no they don't have any problem at all with you being on your period. My last one was in April and I was on my period then. I just told them that I was and they said no problem. I can't wear tampons so they just gave me a pad to wear afterwards.

Yes, even though you have your period, they will do the colonoscopy. I told the nurses my "problem" when I arrived and they said not to worry, it happens often. I kept my undies and a pad on while in the holding area - I never use tampons anyway. When the time came for the procedure, I went to sleep laying on my side - they did the necessary to get my undies out of the way and when I woke up they had replaced my pad with a fresh one. They said it happens often. I was mortified and embarrassed, but to them it was just another day. I would suggest wearing a pad that day and I'm pretty sure your physician would agree. However, if you call your doctor's office and ask which is better tampon or pad, you will have the correct answer. I hope I don't gross anyone out, but just some food for thought - if you wear a tampon during the cleanout procedure, you're going to have a really disgusting string, not to mention that with the cleanout diarrhea and cramps you might be a bit uncomfortable with that inside.

I am sorry I didn't get to you on this question sooner. You have gotten great advice here though, so I don't have to say anything. Please do let us know what you find out. There shouldn't be any problem whatsoever with this.  They are two separate "systems," so to speak...so you can rest assured they will still go ahead with the procedure.  And don't be embarrassed - your GI has seen worse than a little Aunt Flo!
