Hi, I am new here.  I had my first upper endoscopy today and the dr took two biopsies(yes, I was awake the entire time).  I asked the dr why he took the biopsies and he told me not to worry about it but never answered my question.  I can not sleep as I am reading that dr's do not take biopsies unless they see something odd or suspect something.  Any advice or insights would be great as this is going to be a long ten days

Hello there Tresa...and welcome to healingwell!!!! I am sorry you are nervous, and not feeling awesome right now, but I am happy you have found us. This is a great place to get information and support!

Don't allow yourself to worry. If the doctor is saying not to worry, then don't worry. If there was something for you to worry about, he'd let you know. He may have just taken the biopsies as a precaution. Did he take polups...I know I spelled that wrong...and you are just thinking biopsies????

Stick with us, you will get so much information and support here, and don't worry yourself sick about this. I know that is easier said than done, but really, don't waste your worry now. If the time comes for you to worry, do it then. Again, I know easier said than done.

Best Wishes to you, and again, Welcome Aboard!

I think it's normal for doctor's to take biopsies just because it's kind of a bummer to have the test done if they don't take any. They can check for inflammation like reflux (GERD), diseases like celiac (gluten intolerance), to check the lining of your stomach or numerous other things. Just because they took them doesn't mean it's bad news. They can also take them for peace of mind, to prove you have no inflammation or other issues going on. I've had 5 or so upper endoscopies all with biopsies and only the most recent one came back positive for esphogitis. Most the time they just say your biopsies came back normal.

Thank you for the replies.  It was definitely biopsies and I hope it was precautionary.  I will be able to call tomorrow to find out the specifics on my endoscopy as when I called today they told me that they did not have my chart back.

Praying and hoping for good results

I absolutely agree with you there. 10 normal days will fly by, but when you are waiting for something, they will drag.

Try to do things to keep your mind off what's going on. Do you have any hobbies? Go for walks...if weather permits, read, find things to keep your mind going so you don't drive yourself crazy waiting.

In the meantime, we are here for you, and will help you through this tough time, if you need ANYTHING.

Best Wishes!

The problem is that I am in outside sales and I cover Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota which are huge states with a lot of windshield time in between customers.  The other problem is that the Nexium is making me really cramped up nauseated

I will try to keep my mind off it in the interim

Thank you,

Tresa

Hmmm, 10 days....just think...ten days from now I'll be freaking out that Christmas is here and I probably still won't be ready!! If you are into the holidays think of all the holiday stuff you can do in ten days.

Okay, I got some info. I had a lot of inflammation in my stomach but no H-Pylori which makes me feel better. Is Nexium supposed to help me with inflammation as all I notice is the horrible stomach pain as side effects

Nexium works by blocking the acid in the stomach. So, if your inflamation is acid induced, Nexium should give some releif.

Let us know how that goes for you!
