I've been reading the discussions of tramadol with some interest. I was prescribed Ryzolt, a tramadol 24 time-release, about 10 months ago, and it was a miracle - I hadn't slept through the night because of pain for almost a year, and could hardly climb stairs, and the medication helped all that a lot. (I've always taken it about 7 pm, so it would peak during my sleep. It's a 200 mg pill.)

When I had my hip replaced I was on other meds.... as I stopped those I went back on the Ryzolt because, by end of day, I was hurting and also I couldn't sleep. (The tramadol has helped me sleep... an issue for my age often, OA or not! lol)

I think I can stop the Ryzolt now - hip is coming along beautifully, lower back hasn't been bad... I skipped it last night and had incredible night sweats and very fitful sleep. Was this something else, (could have been a variety of other issues, from anxiety to hot flashes) or likely withdrawal symptoms....?

Because of my UC and the way almost anything affects my gut, I like to "taper" off any meds, but... how to taper off a 24 hour thing?! (I so have 4 regular tramadol pills left from my surgery recup - thought I'd reserve those in case I needed them to replace and taper the time release one.)
I finally took Ryzolt at 2 am... not sure it helped much, so I'm not sure the lack of it was the culprit, physically, at least. (In my waking times I was angsting about not having taken it and possible pain - I'm a wimp.)

I'll do some Net searching, but I thought I'd ask here, too.

I never heard of Ryzolt before. 24 hour and instant release too! Sounds really good. Asacol could be responsible for the hot flushes. You don't really have enough regular tramadol for a taper.

Thanks!
When I re-read the package insert, it said not to go off suddenly, but.... I will try the night again without and see what happens.
I have so many reasons for night sweats, between the UC, menopause, meds, and... teenagers! - that, who knows!

It is a good med, it's done well for me. If tonight doesn't work, I'll put a call in to my PCP, who prescribed it, and go get his advice.

I had to go off my tramadol for a few days, discovered my problems weren't from that but another med, possibly plus my vitamin or some food. I'm doing much better on my extended release tramadol, 100 mg gets me through the night. But it doesn't work well at all if I am late and let the pain build up.

I like not having to remember to take a second instant release pill in the middle of the night, or at noon. I can get away with just the night ER about 8PM and an IR about 2 or 3PM the next day.

Tramadol isn't enough for surgical pain or sciatica, but it helps some. I take it mainly for fibromyalgia muscle pain, and for that it does a better job than Vicodin.

I sometimes think my middle name is guinea pig. It's totally up to me to figure out what treatment works for what condition and on what schedule.

I am extending the 24 hours to 28, 30, etc each day to eventually go off the tramadol. I'm not sure I need it anymore (guess I'll find out - lol!) My hip i great now, just some OS back pain.... but even that is some better now that my hip is redone and my legs are the same length and my limp is pretty much gone....!

Yes, I know the guinea pig feeling. I have that a lot in regard to my UC.
(Incidentally - I've been on this dose of Asacol for about 10 years, so.... I doubt I'd have any new effects from it, but I do know the UC itself can cause night sweats.....)

Have been cool as a cucumber since that one night. :-)
Thanks for listening!

tramadol is a mild opiate [synthetic] with a molecular stucture similar to venlafexine [effexor]. tramadol binds weakly to the mu-opioid receptor and has serotonin reuptake inhibition like the SSRI. if it is discontinued abruptly you have mild abstinence effects of opiates and SSRI's.

I've gotten off mine cold-turkey several times. Not nearly as bad as getting off Neurontin without tapering!

songlady...  It sounds like withdrawel symptoms to me. I have read this can happen when you abruptly go off tramadol.

i hope it goes easier for you by tapering off. I can relate to some of what your going thru. I had the worse hot flashes imaginable. I was in total misery. Taking hormone replacement worked wonders for me, till my doctor cut me off. You know cause of the risk of heart disease. I told her , I don't care, i'll take the chance, this is too awful. She wouldn't budge though. shakehead

I'm glad to hear your hip replacement went so well. My left hip is quite bad, and I know I need a THR too. So my doc gave me a referral to see a rheumy, but I can't get in till march 17th!!  Also I have no insurance, so what can I do but wait?

Hi Debbie -
Yes, I'm pretty sure it was withdrawal - and I'm just not quite comfortable enough yet without the med to make myself go through it completely yet so... I'm taking a 24-hour pill at longer and longer intervals and will likely go see my Primary, who prescribed it, for a lower dose or whatever he recommends to get off it.
My hip replacement was such a good decision! This summer I went to a lake cottage in Maine with my family and I was able to walk fine, and - this was dramatic for me - I could get in and out of a canoe gracefully!! (And I did so several times each day...!) For about 5 years I'd been more and more awkward in doing things like that, and just though it was age or out-of-shapeness..... apparently it was my lessening range of motion! So - a new lease on life here!
I'm so sorry about your waiting and about what it means to have no insurance - I thank God for my husband's job and related insurance.
I'll be thinking of you!

Song lady, how wonderful that your hip replacement has turned out so well for you.

I have read that a high percentage of THRs are quite successful.

I know exactly what it's like to not be able to get around like you use to. Things we take for granted like getting in and out of cars. With me the small things are not so bad, but what is hard is not being able to walk a long ways for excercise. Really miss it so much.

My Dh and I are actually planning to move back to my home state of California in Dec. Lots of family there, and I can get medical help there , much better than here in Md.

My hips are bad, but I can still manage for awhile longe, I hope! Believe it or not, just buying a 4 inch thick 5 1/2 lb. density memory foam mattress has reduced my hip pain significantly during the night.

Thanks for the reply, and I hope you really enjoy your new hip.

God is good isn't He?

Yes - all the time!

Interesting about the mattress! We bought a "Sears-o-pedic" (lol) a few years ago, when I was having pain sleeping, and I LOVE it..... my husband is not nearly as fond of it. I'm thinking that in addition to things like sleep position, weight and shape of the sleeper, if my arthritic parts like the softness - whereas he doesn't have the OA issue.

Hang in there - it sounds as if you have a plan to get yourself taken care of! Great!

I know this is long but I'm desperate for some answers and Im a lil stressed.
Hello. I am 17 with fibro. I started taking Tramadol like 4 months ago because I cant take NSAIDS or narcotics. Take 2 pills twice a day, doctor and instructions say i can take 2 pills every 6 hours. But i ussualy wait around 9 or 10. First time I took it I felt HIGH, as a kite Couldn't stop laughing, scary, but felt great. Leveled out, no more high, drastically reduced my pain for a long period of time. UNTILL like ALL drugs i take, it stopped working well or at all after a few months.

Doctor then prescribed a topical patch that releases a version of lidocaine to numb the pain a little, called Lidoderm. Didnt take tramadol the day before(but i have skipped a day or two of Tramadol before with no down side or symptoms). Woke at 10, got a massage, put Bio Freeze on neck and back and put the patch on neck and back a few minutes later. Within 30 seconds I was hysterical. Hyperventilating to a point. SO uncomfortable I would have preferred acute pain to the dull tingly BLECH that I was experiencing. Couldnt stop crying. Doc said to try to leave them on the full 12 hrs, took them off 5 hours later at 9pm.

That night couldnt get comfortable any where in my house, couldn't sleep. By early morning I had a 99 fever, not quite a 100 but since i run natually lowwww 96 or 97 this is high for me. Had a fever, sweats/chills, swollen painful glands, terrible earache, and felt achey flu-like all over(differently than I feel with Fibromyalgia) It was awful.

At 1pm when I was still not tired ( and been up for 27hrs) I decided to try and take a Tramadol even though they had stopped working for me, hoping for any kind of relief. Within the hour my tremors and sweats/ chills stopped, fever went down, temp back to my reg cool 97. Everything was fine, except the Tramadol made me REALLY HIGH again, just like it used to months ago....
???!????!?

Withdrawal? Tramadol/ Ultram withdrawal? Doesn't make sense cause i have been off of Tramadol before for just as long with out noticing any real difference. PLUSSS I was all fine and dandy until the SECOND I put the Lidoderm patch on, then everything fell down hill. Was it the Lidoderm trauma, BIO FREEZE, or what? Was I just sick and the Tramadol somehow fixed it?

If anyone could lend a suggestion, or anything really would help. I like the pain relief from the tramadol but not the high I get, plus the events of this past day scare the bonkers out of me and I would feel better with answers.
Thanks for reading - really anything would be really helpful.

Wow! 2 tramadol at a time to start with? And you're taking Flexeril too??? I only take 50 mg tramadol. Running a fever sounds like serotonin syndrome. I get that from tramadol if I take too much - like 2! I also got it when I took Flexeril and just 1 tramadol in the same day.

Flexeril and tramadol are well known to interract to cause serotonin syndrome. Tramadol is well known to cause it by itself. Tramadol interacts with lots of drugs.

I don't know what some of those other pills are, but from their names you might want to stop them too - same reason - interaction.

I take Tramadol too, from 2 -4 a day depending on my pain on any given day.

Alcie is right, it can ibteract with many medicenes, but some people have no problems with it.

It turns out for me, I can't take anything else I have tried so far with it except Flexeril, 1 at night.  And if I take them too close together I will have muscle twitches.   I really need something better to help me sleep, but even prescribed sleeping meds w/ Tramadol cause me severe nausea.

When I tried switching Tramadol to tylenol 3/codeine, I went thru pretty bad withdrawal, so keep this in mind. My recent PCP told me Yramadol does not cause withdrawal, but I know better. I even read user reviews about it, and there is no doubt, unless all those people were lying!

I'm finding more and more amazing how so many doctors do not know as much as they think they do.

I hope you find something that will wprk for you, it can take some time to find the right meds for this illness, as we are all different in how meds affect us.

Blessings

Debbie
