I have been seeing a specialist for CMC for a couple months. Last week he put a shot into the thumb joint and my expectation was that my hand would feel normal again. The shot hasn't done anything. For those of you who had the injection, does it take a while for it to take effect? Doctor says the next step will be surgery and though I am not pleased with the lengthy recovery, at least I am retired. The pain effects all the activities I enjoy in retirement so it will be worth it in the long run.

I was treated 3 times with the injections and found the first one to work best and to last the longest.  Sorry to hear the injection did not work for you.  My Dr. also recommended surgery but I still have not had any surgery as the joint does not hurt as bad anymore - no idea why smhair   (6 years have gone by since I was scheduled for surgery but came down with pneumonia 2 days prior to surgery and I never rescheduled).
Good luck and if you need the surgery - gather all your data before making your final decision.  Be your own best advocate.

Thanks so much for the answer. The shot seems now to be working better but it took one week before anything changed. It still is painful but I was able to do a lot of cleaning yester and the joint doesn't feel too bad.

Glad your joint is well. Too bad you had to go thru pneumonia to fix it though.

I had one steroid shot in my right thumb joint. It did not help. Doctor said if first steroid shot did not help,no use in repeating same shot so that meant surgery.

I was very limited in hand use because my thumb joint was out on my right hand, my good hand. I did have the surgery and have no problems now, however, the recovery was extremely inconvenient as I had a cast on for weeks. Could not use my right hand to do hair, put on socks, etc....very inconvenient. Thankfully, I had a husband who could help me!

My left thumb joint is out as well. Doctor said I would need surgery on that hand as well down the road This was in March 2009 and I've not had any problems with the left hand -- it is obvious that the thumb is out of joint, but until it prohibits my use, I am not fooling with it. It is causing no pain.
