After 10 years of being told that I needed TKR on my right knee, I finally decided to schedule the surgery for 12/16. However......I have questions. Obviously since this will be 9 days before Christmas, it isn't the most preferred time. The big thing that I am working around is a vacation on 2/24 and will require about 10 hrs. of driving time (which can be broken into 2 days). Will I be healed enough to be able to make a drive such as this? I'm sure that is difficult to answer since everyone heals at a different pace. I'm just looking for a little guidance. If I can get the surgery moved up before 10/20, will that give enough time to be able to make a 5 hr. trip at Thanksgiving? Just lots of questions. shakehead

Hello & welcome to the forum. In all honesty I think you are going to be pushing it planning a road trip that soon. You will need rehab after surgery, the rehab is every bit as important as the surgery itself. I think it would be pretty bad to leave town that soon after surgery, what if a problem crops up, no dr out of town will be of any help. If this were me I would plan my surgery for October & know I am past a lot of possible potential problems & go on my trip with no worries.I think you may be asking for trouble trying to make trips so soon after surgery.

Good luck with your surgery.

I was in rehab for four weeks, off my walker after three weeks. Two months after my knee replacement, I was able to do everything I could do before I had knee problems. I will say, however, on a long ride your knee will get stiff from being in the same position for a long period of time. Try to stop about every two hours and walk around a bit to loosen it up. If you're driving, cruise control will help.

Good luck, and enjoy your trip!
