I woke up this morning with pain right in the middle of my chest...it feels like its right under my sternum. Could this be related to asthma or a cold? All week I have felt like I have a cold coming on....and my asthma has been flaring up some. Last night when I went to bed my asthma was bothering me. I have had this pain one other time and it ended up radiating over my whole chest and was painful to breath and it only lasted like an hour or two.

you haven't disclosed how the pain feel like whether its constricting pain or just dull pain..
I can't just rule out something dangerous related to cardiac problems but i guess its related to lungs.
well lets guess what could cause sternum pain.
hummm...
O.k Do you have acid reflux disease ? This might also cause Your sternum pain.
Well do you have severe coughing too this might strain chest muscles, and as a result you get pain for some days and it fade away after some days.

Have you done x-ray? i suggest one to rule out any sternal injuries .

i would suggest you to visit your doctor if pain persists for more than 2-3 days..and if it doesn't relief with anti-inflammatory medicaltions.

Latina,
Hope you're feeling better today. If not, how about a quick call to the nurse at your doctor's office? They can often help you sort this out and decide if you need to come in for a check. Don't want to ignore chest pain... especially in women.

The pain was kind of sharp to where it hurt more when  I would breath in. No I dont have acid reflux and yes I do cough a lot. I have a night time cough due to asthma. I have had a chest x-ray done recently b/c I was in a car accident back in October and my sternum is fine I do have a rib on the bottom left still a lil out of place. I know my heart is healthy no problems there...Im 23 and in shape only 120lbs and exercise regularly. That was the first time I have had pain under my sternum. I have had a couple times where it feels like my whole chest (front and back) hurt and cramp up and its a very sharp pain when I breath in or out and I dont want to move and it will last for a few hours and then will just disappear. I usually get chest pain around my back where my ribs are...it has to be related to my asthma b/c I start to feel short of breath. Which I am feeling right now....with some wheezing which is unusally for me...with some chest tightness in the front. The longest it will last is a day.

latinachic,

I don't mean to be unkind, but you keep coming on board with different chest symptoms and pretty much you have been told every time that you need to see a physician for a diagnosis. We are not medical professionals, just volunteers and wouldn't want to take a guess at something that could or could not be serious. I, personally, think you need to see your physician.

Please do not repeat the same questions over and over.

Thanks!

Thanks...I am trying to go to see a doctor but I cant afford it right now. Im a full time college student with a part time job. Im already seeing a doctor for my back and ribs from my car accident and hes in another town so its costing me a lot to drive back and forth. Im sorry if I repeated the question...and I am trying my best to get to my doctor but I can only do so much. Thank You
