I usually visit the ulcerative colitis forum, but am here today to ask about my husband's sore throat.

He's had a sore throat off and on for about 2 months I think.  It's not scratchy like the usual kind he gets before a cold.  His throat feels kind of swollen and the glands in his neck are swollen, but it comes and goes throughout the day. He's also more tired than usual.  The doctor said maybe it was allergies.  Is it possible to have only a swollen throat and glands as symptoms of an allergy? The doctor did a swab and it came back negative for strep.

He went back to the doctor last week and she said it looked a little irritated so gave him antibiotics.  After 4 days of antibiotics, it's no better. So either it's not bacterial or it's resistant to the antibiotics he was given.

Does anyone have an allergy where a swollen glands and throat are the only symptoms?

Has he been tested for mono? Sore throat, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes are common symptoms of mono...and it lasts for quite a while. I have never had swollan glands or a swollen throat as symptoms of my allergies, but maybe others have. Does the back of his throat have pus in it (sign of a possible bacterial infection)? Has he seen an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist or an allergist? Hope he feels better soon. Sore throats suck big time...especially if they last for months!

Thanks for the reply Sarah!

He hasn't been tested for mono. He hasn't had a fever and his tiredness could also be because he doesn't go to bed early enough. I don't think he has pus at the back of his throat and it didn't even look irritated until this past week. I'll try to get him to go back to the doctor and ask for a referal to an ENT or allergist. It's weird that it seems to come and go throughout the day.

the only thing I can think of about coming and going is body energy. When I wake in the morning I feel fine. .if I have a cold (like now) I am ok in the morning until abou t 10 am when I get really stuffy and congested. After I've had lunch when I usually have an energy burst in the day the symptoms back off again and I'm ok until later in the evening when I get knocked back by the cold again. Maybe his body is doing the same to the point that his symptoms go away and then when he's feeling more tired they pop back up?

Just a thought.

I think Sara could be onto something.  It has been about 40 years since I had mono, but the symptoms sound very familiar.  Does he get headaches?  Please remember we are just volunteers, not medical professionals.

I think seeing an allergist or an ENT would be a good idea.

Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions Kim and Carla!  No he doesn't get headaches.  Now I have to see if I can get him to go back to the doctor.

I don't think you necessarily have to have a fever to have mono, but I'm not sure. Let us know what the doctor says. Sometimes when I have a cold or other infection my symptoms wax and wane throughout the day, but I rarely feel completely better and then sick again within a day.

usually a sore throat with allergies at least for my mom and I it tends to feel scratchy or sometimes like a raw feeling that's due to the mucus clinging to the back of the throat and the constant clearing of the throat that aggitates it. at any rate you should never go more than a week or two with a sore throat without having a dr. take a look especially since things like throat cancer could be treated easily if caught soon enough. good luck ! make sure you see a dr.

it could be reflux...found that i have reflux and it was caused by using bronchodilators for so many years. i had asthma first and used the brochodilators for that and then came down with reflux. now i use omeprazole to control the reflux and my sore throats are much less frequent and less severe. i must use omeprazole even if i wanted to live with the sore throats because i take mobic for arhritis. mobic is a strong aspirin based medicine which could cause a stomach ulcer if i didn't use the reflux drug.

am i having fun yet?????????????????

also wanted to say that reflux can be caused by a variety of problems and is very common.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

He has been to the dr 3 times now. The first time to check for strep - came back negative. Second time the dr said he had a bacterial infection and gave him antibiotics for week (didn't help). A week after finishing the antibiotics, he got a cold that lasted for the first 3 days of our 5 day holiday in Toronto (the new rollercoaster 'Behemoth' at Canada's Wonderland was awesome!). The last 2 days of our trip were great for him - glands no longer swollen and sore throat was gone. A couple of days after getting home his glands and throat were swollen again.  Third trip to the dr was Friday and they took blood to check for mono. We haven't heard the results yet, but I'll let you know when we hear.

Wow. Definitely let us know what the results say. Almost makes me wonder if he does have an allergy to something in your house, since the sore throat started up again when you got home. Who knows though. Glad you had fun on the rollercoaster though!

So we still don't know what's causing my husband's sore throat. He's been back to the dr a couple more times. He finally asked for a referral to an ENT dr like I asked him to, but he's still waiting for that appt. The last time he went to the dr, he was prescribed a nasal spray for allergies (Nasonex or something I think). That was just before we went on a camping trip to Northern Ontario 2 weeks ago. His throat was feeling a bit better after using the spray for a few days, but he missed a few days days with the spray in the middle of our trip and his throat started getting more sore again. He's back on the spray, so we'll see if he improves again.
