I'm a very athletic person.I am a basketball player. My at=sthma didn't bother me for almost 5 years and it came back out of no where.I got used to being able to play basketball and other sports and now i can't.I'm just very bored because i can't do the things I i like to do because of asthma or I will start coughing. Can anyone understand?

Hi Pins...everyone on this forum will understand how you feel...asthma is an awful condition and at times gets us all down and fed up....but there is hope my friend.I suddenly started having severe asthma attacks 20+ years ago after being stung by a hornetand having a severe allergic reaction...it was devastating to not be able to swim competitively, ski ,ride my horse and do many active things as much as I had before the asthma got too bad.But I got it under control with the right meds and a very healthy diet and exercise programme. Now I go swimming with my grand son, walk every day and live a full and active life.Of course there are days when the asthma rears its ugly head and I feel really bad, but it passes after rest and and I get back to my activities and put two fingers up to the asthma. If you would like a diet and exercise plan to help fight the boredom and get back to regular exercise let me know...I will happily e-mail you a diet and exercise plan and support you along the way...Stay positive....hugs Grooveyx

Pins, You are obviouslly still a lovely young woman and you have your whole life ahead of you even with the wretched asthma.First of all accept that your physical activities will to a degree be limited at time because of the asthma...but it does not have to rule your life....there are many olympic athletes who are asthmatic but still complete to an amazing level....the important thing is to accept you have asthma and that there are meds to control it most of the time. Then set yourself a small physical activity goal and complete it until you can do it without the coughing and wheezing...slowly increase your activity day by day and reward yourself for every achievement....a new nail varnish or lipstick...something simple.
Try to get your family or best friend to support you and dont give up....you can do it.Discuss your exercise plan with your doc or health support and go for it.After 20 years of asthma I am now back swimming 1/2 mile a day and walking every weekend....3 miles. It wont be easy to begin with but the more you exercise your lungs the stronger they will become.Try to eat lots of fish foods, white meat, vegetables.tomatoes, celery, onions, honey and any fruits and keep of the junk food...go for it gal....keep in contact...grooveyxxx
