I have asthma which has been under control for years. I've been on Advair 100/50 for several years and hardly ever used my albutoral. HOWEVER, after a cold in July my asthma flaired up. Went to doctor. Went to Advair 250/50 and also Prilosec OTC. No change. Doc took me off Priosec and upped me to Advair 500/50. Still no change. My symptoms are, and they are not constant: need to clear throat, sometimes a burning or rawness feeling in throat, some chest discomfort, sometimes wheezing and tightness. The strange part is that all symptoms subside when I lay down and I sleep really well at night. But most of the time, not alway, I get up and slowly feel the need to clear my throat. I've had two days in the past week that I had no symptoms. GOing into doctor again tomorrow. Another strange thing, symptoms seem to subside, or at least lessen, when I'm talking, moving around (not exercise moving around).

Anyone else have similar type symptoms and do you have a diagnosis???

Thank you!!!

Hi Muffer, read your post and while I don't know what might be wrong I am wondering if you are having post nasal drip and that is why you have to clear your throat and feel some discomfort.  Do you take a daily allergy med like Allegra or Zyrtec?  I have asthma which is controllled with an azmacort and albuterol inhalers, but I also take Allegra every day to stop the post nasal drip which can clog the lungs and cause the throat clearing andd coughing.  I don't know if that might be what is wrong with you but it is worth asking your dr.  Also, this year has been the worst ever for allergies and asthma.  The mold and pollen counts have been out of sight.  Don't know where you live but it seems to be all over the country.  Just thought this idea might help you.

Some of your symptoms sound alot like some of mine-my issue is that I have GERD-reflux problems due to being overweight and the acids back up into my lungs and stir up my asthma.  I see you said you were on Prilosec was it for acid indigestion?  You may need some acid prescription medications and need to see a gastroenterologist as well-just a thought-Good Luck

Thanks for responding botha.  No, I don't feel like I have post nasal drip or experience any type of drainage.  I actually went back to Dr this a.m.  He's puzzled.  Now I'm trying Singular for a few days.  He also had me retested for allergies.  I did this back in 1990 and took shots for several years.  But then back in 2001, I quit because I was doing quite well.  I haven't had any problems until this cold in July.  Now I have yet another cold.  He things that the allergies could be causing the asthma problems.  But one step at a time I guess. . . took another xray and nothing is there.

I took the Prilosec because my Dr suspected acid reflux.  But after I took it for 4 weeks, didn't seem to make a difference.  Had an upper endo back in 2001 and no signs of it back then but I know things can change.  I also was diagnosed back then with a slight hiatal hernia.  In todays visit with Dr. we did talk about possible "silent acide reflux" which he's seen and trying a Rx for that. . . .I"m going to see what the Singular does.

Thanks much fellow asthmatics!!!
