Hello...I have been diagnosed with adult onset asthma. My main problem is chronic coughing every day. Inhalers do not help, prednisone didn't help, I take zyrtex at night, nexium and tessalon perles in the morning. I'm still coughing. My doctor says allergy tests would not help. Is this a trus statement? Does anyone have chronic coughing every day? I also have lupus, doctor says it has nothing to do with the asthma. I'm out of answers. This has been going on for over 18 months.

My son has coughing asthma and he DID have allergy testing done. He was found to be allergic to cats, dogs and dust. Once the allergens in his room was eliminated as best as could be done, his coughing diminished a bit. Allergies can have a huge impact on asthma so if your doc doesn't want to do allergy testing, I would recommend seeing a different doctor. Have you ever tried Singulair? This can help with both asthma and allergies. Also, when you sleep at night, do you have a humidifier or a dehumidifier? Sometimes with asthma if the air is too dry, it can aggravate your lungs causing you to cough as well as if it is too humid. We spend so many hours in our bedroom at night and sometimes we forget to remedy things in our bedrooms. Btw, welcome to Healingwell :) I know that coughing asthma drives my son nuts too and it can be no fun.

Wow, your in a hard situation, but don't give up, yet...
First thing switch all your bedding linens to hypo allergic ones to see if that helps.
second, are you getting enough water? ( sorry just making sure, cause when I don't get enough I start coughing)
third change out the central ac/heating air filters in your house, this needs to be done every 2 to three months
as they can collect a lot of dust.
Clean all air vents and ceiling fans too...
I also agree with Sherry's suggestions.
also, you might want to try a saline nasal "Spray" as it might be a sinus problem going on.
these are just some suggestions, okay...
but at this time of year the saline nasal spray sure helps for me.
Hope this helps, keep us posted.
Soft Hugz
and if you still wanna do allergy testing then go and get tested, However the allergy test are not definitive and you can have false/positive's and vise versa.
I did have allergy testing and do believe the results of being very positive to dogs as they do make me sneeze......
Nice to meet you by the way...Howdy.........

Well, I went to the allergist today and he did a number of tests. He doesn't think all the coughing is asthma...but GERD. Although, the pulmonologist still says it is asthma. I will be on Nexium and Prilosec but stop the zyrtec and tessalon. Will I make the 1st doctor upset if I call and tell him about the 2nd doctor?? All I can do is try this for a couple of weeks and see where I am at the end.

I've also been having a lot of coughing trouble. It's not a problem everyday but it happens quite frequently. I do have asthma but I'm not sure if this is asthma related because I don't have any trouble breathing associated with it. A lot of times it seems to get worse after eating and I'd say it was a food intolerance except that I can't pinpoint any foods that are the same each time it happens. All I know is that throat lozenges really seem to help.

GERD is a very common cause of chronic cough. Sometimes asthma and GERD are both part of the problem and they can each aggravate the other. The other common cause is post-nasal drip.

I have adult onset cough variant asthma. I cough everyday. If my asthma is acting up I will cough even more. But as long as it's in control it's not too annoying. I don't test positive for it but my meds help a great deal, therefore that's where my diagnosis came from, and it took 3 years to get that answer. The GERD drugs did nothing to stop my cough which showed that that was not the problem.

I know 18 months is a long time to deal with a cough. Just keep looking for answers, even if that means seeing a specialist or another doctor. (I've been to 6.)

Hi Quilter,  just a few other suggestions.  I had my bedroom thoroughly cleaned, got all new hypo-allergenic bedding and the best dust mite covers for everything, espescially the mattress at they really collect there.  The other thing I did was get an air purifier for my room. This is not a humidifier or dehumidifier.  It filters the air in the room and removes all the dust, mold and offending particles.  It might be worth looking into.  Also, when I cough a lot I drink tea with honey.  I have found honey to be very calming and seems to help quiet the cough.  But I am also on a new med for my asthma called symbicort and it cleared me up the first day I used it.  I haven't used my rescue inhaler in a week.  And I am breathiing very freely now.  So I just wanted to give you a few ideas and see if anything will work for you.  Also, you should probably change your furnace filters at least once a month.  That is what my heating company tells me and it is true they are all dusty after a month.  You can get some at the hardware store for very cheap and they work as well as others.  The 3 month ones I was told do not last that long so is a waste of money.  Let us know how you are gettiing along.Take care.

Hi all;) Just wanted to say, "I have a chronic cough." I've had it for over 5 years. Surgery's include (No specific order) a Nissen Fundoplication wrap for acid reflux, two sinus surgeries for sinusitis and polyp removal, tonsils removed. I am 35 years of age I have asthma I used to smoke as a teen for two years. have used chewing tobacco. I quit chewing tobacco for three years thinking it was causing cough. It didn't help but didn't hurt either. X-rays of lungs normal. C T's of lung normal. Blood test normal. I'm hypoglycemic. I currently take Symbicort for asthma and xopenex and iprotropium bromide. My house is dust free, humidity is decent. I've tried every inhaler i can think of for asthma. nasal sprays the same. CT's of sinus and throat normal. had several scopes, both ends normal. allergy test normal. I can't shake this cough. You guys don't give up I'm not... I have thicker than normal mucus almost sticky but no cystic fibrosis. Tried tesslon pearl every over the counter cough medicine no avail. Tussionex works but its a narcotic good luck getting more than five days worth. I've had a spinal injury but recovered. I drink alcohol twice a year. quit all caffeine drinks for two yrs but started again recently. I've tried every conventional method of treatment for cough. Someone HELP ME please....

Hi AtomicDog :) Welcome to HW. I'm sorry that you are having a rough time :( It does seem you have tried pretty much everything. Do the doctors have any idea what the problem can be? Do they think it's your asthma? Maybe they should play with your meds a bit to see if it helps with the cough. Have you ever tried Asmanex yet? What about Albuterol - I think they discontinued the inhaler but what about......ohhh shoot! I can't remember what they call it LOL. The machine you plug in, add the medication and breath it in. Do you drink lots of water? Have you ever tried a Netti Pot?

Hi,

I have been on Prednisone for over 5 years, and have been told I will probably always be on Prednisone. As for pred side effects, it completely stripped me of any libedo, I have some depression, weight gain, moon face, and the usual bone de-calcification. My muscles cramp constantly and I have low thyroid now. I regularly get blood tests to check everything. I have the coughing kind of asthma and recently my asthma Doctor suggested I try lidocaine 10mg/ml when I do my neb to help with the coughing...miracles happen it does help. I put 2 cc's in with my neb treatment if I'm coughing a lot and I soon subside enough for the other meds to help.

I have found that getting off the Pred after so long is very hard. Getting under 10mg has been a very very slow and painful process. I am now on 10mg/even day, 5mg/odd day. This is the lowest I have been in years, I'm hoping that I have a good winter and am able to continue my downward trend.

I have to take 1500 mg of calcium a day, with 400 mg of vitamin D. I take B50 complex and echinacea to help my body fight off illnesses. I have to take numerous asthma meds (inhalers, nebulizer meds), high blood pressure (from the weight gain), and I have GERD.

I wish someone had told me that Prednisone is a dark path to start on, because it definitely is a double edged sword. Helps you to breath but gives you so many other issues. skull

My father suffered from chronic ashtma for most fo his life. One thing he used, which you don't hear bout very often, are herbs. Thyme in particular helps to ease bronchitis and asthma. Try adding it to your foods and your tea.

*whispers to red* ur right albuterol was discontiued, its Pro-Air now.
Ok, I confess, that is off my medical and personal expierience lol!

Chronic cough, ouch I cant use my medical training only shoot you in general directios. Well, it can be a combition of GERD and Asthma. Treatment could be being treated for both.

Personal experience.... I have GERD and asthma. I do find it does give me trouble, but when I cough, I do a "coughing fit" and hack repeatedly for a few minutes off and on. I usually just eat a couple rolaids and use my rescue inhaler.

All I can say is if you want, I'd be happy to email you more help. but I cant say much past my personal experience here.. or red will bite me. I mean, I love ya red Hehehe

Hello,

Have you been diagnosed with sjogren's? It usually goes hand in hand with the lupus. It has been determined that my asthma was caused by lupus and sjogren's. I had this confirmed by two pulmonary doctors. I take Singular, Spiriva, advair and prednisone. Talk to your rhuemy. Good luck to ya

Hi

I have just got rid of a chronic cough - have had two bouts of bronchitis during the last three months,(without having a cold),  phlegm ran into my lungs, had x-rays taken which showed pleural thickening.    To shorten a very long story of wrong medication which didnt work .... eventually found out that the phlegm came from my stomach due to low stomach acid !!

So believe it,  your stomach can cause bronchitis, asthma etc etc ...

When the "valve" for a better description, above your stomach becomes faulty, contents of your stomach pushes up your throat.  (GERD)  Mostly acid which ends up with heartburn, but I never had heartburn in my life and in my case it was  phlegm which was pushed up, at night running down my bronchial tubes.

There is a very interesting article on the grandtimes.com website, : "Gerd: the surprising cause of many physical disorders",  from which I learnt a lot.

So with low stomach acid, bought "Bio-Enzymes" and after three days my phlegm is gone and so is my cough, just like a miracle.  So you never know!

good luck ...

I have been coughing for almost 3 months now. After 3 weeks of coughing I finally saw my doctor. I was coughing, weezing, sob, and had very shallow breathing. She had to give me a nebulizer and sent me for x-rays, which were clear. She also gave me a Ventolin inhaler to take home. When I saw her a month later I was still coughing and weezing and having some sob so she referred me to have a pulmonary function test. Of course my test was scheduled for a day I was doing better. I don't have the results back yet, but she is already having me take Flovent and have my Ventolin if I need it. I can feel the difference already. Normaly this time of day I would be coughing like crazy. I think whatever I have is cold induced. I can't wait until this is under control so I can go back to feeling normal. Even if that new normal is taking these meds. The only thing I have ever been allergic to is ragweed....which isn't out after just being hit with a blizzard, and I have never reacted to it like this anyway.

You may have silent reflux. Acid is coming up into your lungs causing lung issues. You might want to explore that option.
