my first asthma attack was almost my last.i have many questions hope to get some input from y'll.i was fine it was early am then suddenly i had alot of pain in my chest and could not draw a breath(no not heart)i had been weezing for weeks but i thought that i was just overweight and out of condition.i live far from towns and did not have a dr. i chewed two asprin and went to bed to calm down.next day not much better i went to dr. office. where they yelled at me telling me i could die, because i did not and would not go to hospital.my 02 sat was 93. no movement on peakflow meter...yes i am stupid as well as stuburn.i now know better and will go to hospital the next time. questions are.. for the next 4 days i was out of breath just walking a few steps. dr said use the inhaler every4 hrs unless i was out of breath then every two. i was also given prednisone just for 7 days.i have been getting better everyday it has been 7 days. but 2 days ago, coughing started like a bark. i have some stuff comming up with the coughing. is this normal? how long does it take to get over an attack? are they always so bad?by the way the pain in my lungs went on for 3 days they felt heavey spongy like. today i can draw a good size breath and not much out of breath. do i cont to use inhaler every4 hrs? i am 52 no lung problems ever no heart problems no med insurance. turn

You need to find a good allergy/asthma Doctor asap and get better instructions by the asthma doctor as to how to use your inhalers,
an asthma doctor would also be able to get you nebulizer treatments which might help you more for now, allergy testing could also,
be done to find your trigger or what might have set of you most recent flair.
To learn more about asthma www.yourlunghealth.org
check it out, asthma can come on at any age and typically your not supposed to have it all your life, but I have.
The chest pain is always a red flag to go to the ER as it could've been a stroke or heart attack and those need treatment within
4 hours or sooner so next time you have chest pain go to the ER, or if the wheezeeing starts up again and your inhalers don't help
Asthma attacks are very serious and could result in death...
Hope your feeling better soon and keep us posted and find an allergy/asthma doctor...

Chest pain normally does red flag. However, in your case I suspect you are coughing really hard as you are "barking a cough." The depth of the cough can cause chest pain. However, you still do need immediate medical attention. Check your peek flow meter stats. Call your pulmonologist stat (uhh asap). As for the coughing crap up, possibly you have bronchitis or phenmonia. Both are going around. You need a 2nd opinion RIGHT AWAY. Every 4 hours is TOO MUCH. In laymans terms, honey, your not getting enough oxygen to your brain. If you have black outs call 911. If you can not complete a sentence, call 911. Don't cut your life short. I stumbled in the ER one time in full blown asthma attack managed to get to a person in scrubs, they asked if they can help me so I gave them my inhaler to tell them asthma. Don't remember anything til I woke up with a full crew of doctors and nursed around me, hooked up til oxygen. I was told I would of died 30minutes later. Don't be stupid and waited til the last minute like I did hon...Get medical attention, even if its in a hospital. You probably also need more prednisone at a higher dose.

yep you are right. dr. put me on prednisone 50mg for 7days then tapering down for the next 12days. also i now now cough surup with codine makes me loopy so i dont use it much. my peek flow increased from 190 to 320. but the predisone makes my blood pressure rise and makes me mean. i cant wait to get off it. i have been wheezing for so long i am not sure what normal for me is. ya see i am overweight i thought that was the problem for months now. and some of it is, but not all of it. i am having a lap band put in on the 18 of this month. I hope i am well enough by then. Its not that i dont want to spend the money on a pul DR it is there is none to spend. my bmi is 52 the weight is going to kill me too, cant do both.

I'm so glad you got in to the doctor! the prednsione will help but it's not the long term medication for control
Make sure you keep follow ups with this doctor.. Prednisone makes me mean too, but as long as it gets your asthma in control
that's the important thing for now.....
Good luck with the lap band surgery, I hope it helps you.........
Keep us posted

Fyi prednisone can also cause hot flashes (had me flipping out cuz I am only 28 LOL, then I got a response when asked doc "Consider it a preview of whats to come in the future." Felt like smacking him!) Other things, muscle cramps and spasms, weird bruise like stretch marks, weight gain. If diabetic it shoots your bloodsugar up so watch your sugar intake. (the hospitalization while I was on it debated if I needed insulin cuz Im type 2 diabetic and I was shooting everywhere for readings). Glad you went to the doctor again. I would say to make sure you had a couple of follow ups too. Pssttt that cough syrup tastes better than nyquil and dayquil LOL

yeah  THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU INPUT. YOU GUYS ANSWER ALOT MORE QUESTIONS THAN THE DR.I AM DOING MUCH BETTER. I ONLY USED THE INHALER ONCE YESTERDAY AND NONE TODAY SO FAR. I STOPPED SWEATING WHEN I TRY TO WALK MUCH. I AM SAVING VACUMMING FOR MONDAY, I THINK THAT IS WHAT SET THIS ALL IN MOTION. I WAS VAC. WHEN THE THING EXPLODED FROM A WAD OF JUNK PUGGED THE HOSE UP. I GOT A NEW DUSTER, ONE THAT HAS MICO WHATEVER SO NONE OF THE DUST GOES INTO THE AIR. WHEN YA SEE SOMEONE IN THE MOVIES HAVING AN ASTHMA ATTACK THEY TAKE A BREATH OR TWO FROM THEIR INHALER AND ALL IS WELL. I HAD NO IDEA IT COULD GET SO BAD. OR TAKE A LONG TIME TO RECOVER FROM. IT SEEMS ONCE YA START TO INPROVE IT GETS GOOD RAPIDLY. I HAVE ONLY BEEN OUT OF THE HOUSE TWICE AND BOTH TIMES IT WAS ALL I COULD DO. THANKS AGAIN FOR WRITING HOPE Y'LL ARE DOING FINE YOURSELFS.
