I'm sorry that your husband is having a difficult time right now. Has he ever been checked for asthma? And yes, emphysema can strike in the early years. Has he been to see a pulmonologist?

My aunt had emphysema, but she was a smoker for 30 years, before I got her to stop when I was 6 yrs old. She lived to the ripe old age of 76.
If you both stop now it can help your lungs last longer.
