Hi, new member, now 59 I had my first experience with asthma at age 40, but had sinus problems and allergies most of my life.  This year has been my worst for asthma and I've just finished a 4 week course of Prednisone that didn't alleviate my breathing difficulties (I also take Advair).  Has anyone else had a lack of success with Prednisone?  Are there alternatives?  The Prednisone side effects are unpleasant.  I also recently bought a Peak Flow Monitor but my readings are always in the high normal range even though my asthma symptoms are present.  Just wondering what others' exeriences have been.
Thanks, good to know there's a forum like this.

The side effects of prednisone can be pretty you have a rescue inhaler and does that help with your breathing??
maybe make another doctors appointment to see what you should do...

You don't have acid reflux by any chance?

I'm with Joy...It sounds like you might be a GERD sufferer, (it can be silent, and you don't even know you have it). The only times prednosone didn't resolve my asthma was when the GERD was the culprit, and the acid was continually inflaming my lungs. My asthma got worse and worse as I aged (I'm 57), and was so bad for the past four years that I finally had the GERD surgery--Nissen Fundoplication. What a difference it has made. My asthma is finally back into control.
Good luck finding the cause of your problem.
Take care,
