For almost a month now I've been waking up with a swollen face and a rash that makes me think drug allergy. I've had many of them so it's not something new.
My face is so red and swollen, that if I push my finger into my face I see a pale mark that slowly fades, just like my leg edema I have. The rash is slightly itchy and is scattered across my temples, forehead, and outer cheek area. It fades after I take my morning zyertec.

Last night I decided to experiment...
I took a zyertec before going to sleep.

I woke up this morning and saw...
no swelling
no rash
So I figure if it's happening at night, it's related to something I take at bedtime.

Advair? No, I take it during the morning too and I've had no trouble.
Patenase? No, again it's also a morning med and no trouble.
Vytorin? Maybe...

Tonight I'm going to experiment again. This time I'm not going to take the vytorin or a zyertec and see if I wake with or without the swelling and rash.

Wish me luck!

Nope, it's not the vytorin. I woke up face swollen as ever and I had the rash off and on all day this time.

This is so frustrating!

Looks like I'm on zyrtec twice a day until I see my allergist on the 26th. :((

Aww that is just horrible Joy! I'm so sorry you are having this issue (still). I hope the appointment with the allergist goes well and they will be able to help you.

This allergy season has been a bad one, so could be an allergy your being exposed to somehow...
Sure hope you and your allergist can figure this one out...
Good luck and well wishes...

Hi! Im sorry to hear your struggles.  Perhaps a neurologist might help.

I have a crazy histamine storm that happens while I sleep, and no doctors can figure out what it going on or what treatment will moderate it.

So when I saw your post I had to respond.

I took a neuroadrenal exam (24 hour saliva test), and it showed an outrageous amount of histamine that surged in the nighttime.

I don't have obvious edema.  I get sore spots on my head and the (top) back of my head will hurt.  My main nighttime symptoms are suddenly waking from severe dry mouth, and hypnic jerking/twitching.  I twitch more if I sleep with certain materials (polyester, down, etc) or if I take certain medications during the day.  During the day I have virtually no problems.

I haven't tried Zyrtec, I'm trying to stick with supplements and avoidance.  However, my doctor just gave me singulair, and told me to take it in the morning. I haven't done it yet.  If I take anticholinergic meds at any time during the day, I parch more at night.  I'm hoping singulair isn't anti-cholinergic.

I haven't been on this forum, I'm usually on the lyme disease one.  A majority of folks on that forum have developed these intolerances/allergies/swelling issues as well.

What I've learned is how sleep issues cause brain inflammation.  Infectious issues as well.

Sorry, I have few answers, just more to throw into the pot.

I hope it clears up for you soon!

Tracy

Thanks Tracy,
I've gotten those bumps before, too. I do dry out at night, but I sleep with a CPAP.

It's so weird to wake up with itchy ears, swollen face, and a strange rash that runs down the sides of my face.

Hi!  Thanks for responding.  Hmm, a cpap can help keep the air humid, huh?

Interesting, I wonder if I could get some sort of humidifier that attaches to me.  However, mold is such a big issue....

Yes, I have to clean the tubing out weekly and the basin and mask daily.

Unfortunately it warms it, too, and I get sweaty sometimes.

Do you breath through your mouth? Snore? Better get checked for sleep apnea. It goes hand in hand with thyroid issues which go hand and hand with Lyme's.

I'm wondering if your allergic to the rubber or latex around the mask of your CPAP, must have something on it that might
be causing your discomfort...just throwing an idea about...
Sure hope your feeling better...

I've thought of that, but the rash is nowhere near the mask area.

The rash runs across my forehead and down the outer edges of my face.

I'm seeing my allergist tomorrow.

The allergist said it's not allergies. It's my thyroid. So now I see an endocrinologist in August.

There's a lot involved with a endocrinologist, you'll be having lots of bloodwork done..
I see my endocrinologist and usually call him dracula...good luck on the bloodwork...
it took me two months to get my first appointment with the endo/dracula...
Good luck

I'm already being drained by my PC every three months. (cholesterol, diabetes, and thyroid)

The best blood draw I ever had was in a hospital in Albany, GA. The lady had the needle in me and out before I could say boo. I didn't even feel it.

The worse was at my doctor's this last time, I was stuck three times and they wiggled the needle! >:<

The endo will draw for diabetes, cholestrol, thyroid, tsh, prolactin, vitaminD, t3, t4, ect...and if it is thyroid it should show up
on either t3-t4 or tsh or maybe a reverse t-3...after my first visit with my endo he had 9 vials of blood drawn up, and it's
done on certain days, during your menstral cycle 4-8 day (I forgot why, but this will be explained to you...) mine was elevated
with prolactin, I have an enlargd pituatary gland, caused by excess prolactin, so it's a prolactin noma (tumor) but it's
being controlled with medicines...good luck to you...and keep us posted with results and stuff...seems like we
go from one doctor to another eh....oh and probably will be fasting for your first one...just a heads up...
I hate it when they wiggle the needle, usually they bruise me as it's hard for them to find my veins...I'm down to just twice a year to get all that tested...
instead of your PCP doing the bloodwork your endo will...
(((((((((Joy)))))))))
remember to keep us posted, prayers and hugz to you...

Wow! No wonder you call him dracula! Nine vials! The most I've ever had was three on one morning and two that evening.

Such fun! :(
