My 10 year old has had breathing problems since he was four weeks old and has been on medication of one kind or another continuously since then.  He does not have severe asthma, but has a chronic mild type that has been difficult to keep under control over the years.  He also has acid reflux disease which may or may not contribute to his breathing difficulties.

His recent blood allergy test results were sky high so he had the skin tests as well to which he reacted to a dozen or so things.  I didn't think that was very much since his older brother reacted to nearly everything, but the doc recommended shots.  The allergist who is also an asthma specialist claims that there is a good chance that if we commit to the shots for next 2-3 years that it may solve his asthma problems.

This is supposed to be a conservative doctor, but is that promising too much?  Anyone have such results?  I am really excited, but I am also dubious.

thanks.

i was a success story for allergy shots. however i had a doctor who did one shot at a time. watch out for the mixers. some just throw all the weeds together and that's one shot. some then take molds and dust and then throw them together and that is another shot. some are even worse and just give one shot of everything. very bad medicine as each shot should be given separately so you know where the bad reaction is coming from. hope it works out for you!

I do think the allergy shots will help, and if he can get the acid reflux under control
then the asthma should be lessened considerably...I do think you should give the
shots a go, they can help.

Thanks @Joan & @Chartreux for your responses and special thanks for the hug chartreux! I have agreed to the shots and the doctor has just informed me that they are mixed and ready to go. Poor kid, between asthma, allergies, reflux and a neurological condition, he has more specialists and medications than his 77 year old grandmother. It would be great if we could cross a few things off the list.

In fact if I can work it out, his first shot will be this afternoon.

My son had asthma of the small airways and his primary symptom was coughing and occasionally shortness of breath. He also had severe allergies and was constantly sick for the first two years of his life. Slowly over the years when we managed to get his allergies under control, his breathing issues abated. He has never had allergy shots though, just medications. He is now 19 and has no issues with his asthma. It seems he even outgrew his allergies. So I hope these shots will help your son, however, it is my understanding that one never gets rid of asthma. It can remain dormant for a long time but it can be activated again in the future if triggered. But allergies and asthma seem to go hand in hand. If they can get your son's allergies under control then it might definitely help with his asthma.

Good luck! I hope you have success with the shots.

I tried them last year, but my ENT did NOT separate them the way Joan describes. I had a bad reaction and never went back, so I'd be all in favor of separating them.
