Hello everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has any insight on childhood asthma? My son is six years old and for the past 2 winters he would get a cold and a cough would remain for weeks. This past spring in april 2010 I noticed he was coughing an awful lot, generally a dry cough throughout the day but never really interrupted his sleep where he woke up and complained. The cough became constant and lasted all through summer and into fall. I had him to a pediatrician and eventually in October he saw a pediatric pulmonologist. They did a spirometry test and no one ever really gave me a diagnosis of what he had? I get concerned as when I type in "chronic cough child" online, I get asthma, gerd and then Cystic fibrosis. I asked if it was asthma and the DR. said she didn't want to label it asthma. Does anyone know anything about pft results? He is 6 years and very tall for his age at 4'5" and 70lbs. His results were:

FVC(PRE) 1.35 L
FVC(PRE%) 60.1 %
FEV1(PRE) 1.21 L
FEV1(PRE%) 59.5 %
FEV1/FVC(PRE) 89.5 %
FEV1/FVC(PRE%) 104.1 %
FEF25-75(PRE) 1.30 L/sec
FEF25-75(PRE%) 50.7 %

They tested him after a breathing treatment with the following results:
FVC(POST) 1.72 L
FVC(POST%) 76.9 %
FVC % Change 27.8 %
FEV1(POST) 1.64 L
FEV1(POST%) 81.2 %
FEV1 % Change 36.5 %
FEV1/FVC(POST) 95.6 %
FEV1/FVC(POST%) 111.2 %
FEF25-75(POST) 1.89 L/sec
FEF25-75(POST%) 73.4 %
FEF25-75 % change 44.8

I have no idea what these numbers mean and I am kicking myself for not asking at the time. They put him on advair and singulair which help tremendously as he does not cough while on them. He currently has a cold so there is a cough right now but I am unsure and think it may just be a cough from the cold and not the "asthma" cough. Would advair and singulair help with a cough that is produced by a cold? We recently moved and are awaiting our appointment with a new pulmonologist until then I am just trying to seek out some answers for peace of mind :) Thank You to anyone who can help.

You might also want to have him tested for allergies. My son has had allergies all his life. When he was 4 he got diagnosed with seasonal asthma and had to use an inhaler with a spacer. He had a chronic cough but only randomly and mainly at night. It would interfere with his sleep so the doctor put him on Singulair, Allegra and Allbuterol. It helped but he was able to go off these meds a few years later. When his symptoms started back up I took him to another doctor and he had the breathing test. The doctor found that he had the most issues with the smaller pathways in his lungs. He was then placed on the meds again and did well. The doctor mentioned that if the meds didn't help him, that she would send him to a pulmonologist for further extensive testing. Luckily he did really well on these meds. He is now 19 and allergy and asthma free.

I can't help with the numbers because I don't know what they mean either but hopefully someone will come along and help you soon.

I was thinking of calling an allergist as well. If it has something to do with allergies, I would love to be able to pinpoint the cause setting him off. So glad to hear your son is better with no more issues. I am holding out hope this is some sort of phase and eventually will all go away :) Seeing your son is now allergy and asthma free gives me some hope! Thank you.
