I have this constant loud hard cough. So hard it hurts my lungs at times. I'm coughing every 5 seconds. It's horrible. My head hurts from coughing. Anyways, my PCP told me she thought it was asthma and put me on Advair. I've been taking Advair for 4 days now and still no improvement.
Does it take longer for Advair to show improvement? Has anyone else had this issue with constant coughing? If so, has Advair helped it?

I don't know how much longer of this cough I can take.

Did you have an xray of your lungs to be sure it's not something else? Have you tried OTC meds to help with the coughing such as Mucinex or cough syrup? I would think you should've seen an improvement by now on the Advair. If you are still coughing, you should call up your doctor to see if she can prescribe something else. Did you recently have a cold? The reason I ask is because I had a cough similar to this a couple years ago. It drove me insane but luckily it only lasted about a week - it was due to a virus.

Hi Fashionista,
I've not had Advair but sounds similar to my Spiriva. I was told it would take a week to kick in properly, now I'm on one inhalation a day plus other meds.
Do get checked out. As Sherry says; it could be just a bug.
Anyway, I empathise. Having busted ribs a few times due to coughing, I am very careful about coughing. If I feel the need, I lean into a big cushion to take the stress off the ribcage and lungs. Not very elegant, but it helps. And don't your shoulders ache too?
Chocolate and/or honey sometimes helps calm things down. I've not found a cough medicine that does any good so far.
I hope things improve for you.

Real bad coughing can be stopped with paregoric. It's a really old medicine but still available in stock at larger pharmacies. Since it's an opiate it needs an Rx. And of course it's not something you'd want to take for a long time, partly because it could be addicting, but it tastes terrible too.

I've tried mucinex and nyquil and it doesn't really help. When I saw my PCP she said my lungs were clear and that she thought it was bronchial irratation. I called her office yesterday because I haven't noticed a major difference with the advair and so she called me in combivent inhaler. After three weeks of this cough my back and ribs are killing me. It makes coughing so painful. I just want it to be over.

When I was at her office originally for the cough, I asked if there was anything she could give me for the cough and she said no since it's asthma related and not an illness.
