I have several antibiotic allergies.
Penicillin- severe facial and body edema and hives
Monocycline-itching like ant bites all over
Levaquin- rash and top lip swells
Sulfur drugs- nausea

The only thing I've been able to take for awhile now is ZPak. But I have to take phengran (anti-nausea) to keep from throwing up.

This time my doctor wouldn't give me the phengran. She said to take probiotics instead. :X

I tried to explain to her it's something like an allergy for me.

Well to make a long story short... I did it her way. :X

I'm now fully allergic to Zpak! >:(
Day one to three- faint rash on my face (tolerable)
Day four all hell breaks loose!
Stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen & red face and hands.

I'm sick to death of these drug allergies!

I hope your feeling better soon and that you have well wishes coming your ways.

This doctor might have been frustrated with what to do but at the same time,
it was very bad of this doctor to not listen to you, try searching for a new
doctor. I hate it when doctor's won't listen it showed an utterly lack
of basic compassion for you. Write this doctor a letter and tell her she
was wrong and out of line.

well wishes and healing hugz.......keep us posted as to how your doing...

She was the PA for my lung doctor.
My face and hands are still red and puffy but getting better.
I've got to find a new antibiotic that I can tolerate now. :(

More research...

doctors never listen! it is very frustrating. i told them for a year that i was in pain and nobody would listen, told prime care doc, rheumatist, surgeon, etc. this was my foot and ankle pain...but why do we have to wait for a year.

i am very very allergic to drugs. it is definitely my worse allergy. z pack left me in a fetal position for about a month. i had terrible gas pains. took gas x type stuff and align and it finally went away.

don't know why doctors are so mean and nasty. my doc didn't even call me back about my reaction. my gastroenterologist did help me out. i could not eat my thanksgiving dinner but did get out that day to visit friends. these doctors don't seem to care or don't realize how messed up we can get. also missed a couple of pot luck parties. this went on for a month. what a drag.

i do hope you feel better soon, joy.

I've found this problem with my primary doctor's PA, too. I think she wants to stick to her standing protocols from the doctor, otherwise she has to go get approval. My doc now knows that I have weird things going on all the time, so I just tell her "Get Dr. Clark" when we disagree. She talks to him, usually he comes in to see me, and I get what I need.

I refuse to ever see a PA for my problems again. I had a UTI and she prescribed me Bactrim. Every day I took it, I was getting sicker and sicker - it felt like someone was stabbing repeatedly in the gut. I even called a couple times and she insisted that this was normal. I finally looked it up online and found out that Bactrim contains sulfa. I am severely allergic to sulfa and what makes it so bad is that is was on my chart!

I'm sorry to hear that this is happening to you. How frustrating!

I researched the types of antibiotics out there.
There are 7 classes of antibiotics now. I'm allergic to six of them. I don't know about the seventh one yet because it's IV antibiotics! :O

I'm very worried! I teach first grade! Germ warfare everyday! :O

Joy - Well, don't use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if you can possibly use soap and water. There's a new study showing noroviruses aren't killed by alcohol. You wouldn't want to end up with gastroenteritis.

Hi Joy
Have you ever tried Garlic Capsules? Garlic is a natural antibotic and if taken daily can help your immune system fight off bugs. Also echinacea drops in every glass of water is also a great immune system booster.

Don't you smell like garlic after a while? Isn't it a blood thinner too?
Echinacea comes from flowers :( I'm allergic.

No you don't smell with the capsules only real garlic. Not sure about blood thinner though, have never heard that about it but could be so. My herbalist advised me to take it when I was really sick last year to boost my immune system and amazingly I didn't even get a cold. However that could have been a coincidence too.
Bummer about the echinacea that really helps me too.
