My 9 year old has cough variant asthma. 2 months ago he started with the cough, set off I am sure by pollen. The coughing slowed and his nose started running with tons of sneezing. 2 days ago, the cough came back. He sounds as if he is going to hack up a lung. He had a hard time sleeping last night. He has used his albuterol, given him Delsym, Flovent, heating pad on his chest (which sometimes calms his cough). I took him to see his Dr this morning and she has prescribed an oral steroid. If he doesnt stop coughing like this he is going to end up throwing up soon. It hurts him to cough and I was trying to find some other ideas to help him. I totally cleaned his room, took the comforter off the bed, took the stuffed animals out. He will get into a shower for the steam, hopefully that will help. I have read that green tea with honey might help. Any other ideas would help, at this point, I think he is willing to try anything.

Thank you nono (he says he wants it GONE!!)

Aww your poor guy :( I know the feeling of watching your child cough up a "lung". My son was the same way. Have you had him tested for allergies? Is he on allergy medications such as Allegra or Zyrtec?

Claritin and Zyrtec doesnt work for him, either does benedryl. He is currently taking Allegra to see if it will work for him. He has been allergy tested. He really only seems to go through this during the Spring change of season, doesnt get bad the rest of the year.

My daughter has severe allergies but not asthma. I had to remove all the carpet from her room and replace it with hardwood. She also does not have curtains in her room - just roller shades. Her mattress and pillows are placed in hypo-allergenic cases. I dust her room for her once a week, including her ceiling fan. I also run an air purifier in her room.

When my son was younger and had cough variant asthma, I used a humidifier in her room to provide extra moisture for his lungs. He was mainly on Albuterol, Asmanex, Singulair and Allegra. Allegra didn't really work for him though. I would give him Mucinex DM in the evenings before bed to help control his coughing.

thats great, I will try the humidifier. I have done that in the past, not sure if it helped or not, but will try it tonight. Anything to get him some restful sleep.

Susan, I just noticed...is that your last name? You might want to change your screen ID and remove your last name for security purposes.
