Hi,
My new allergist has prescribed Zyflo to help counteract my seasonal asthma issues. I believe the pills are HUGE and can't be crushed. He wants me to take 2 twice a day. Seriously? The problem is I had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery that tightens the LES, and have difficulty swallowing large pills. Also, I have a reactive stomach, that doesn't like irritating meds. From what I read Zyflo can cause stomach trouble.

I asked him for some samples before I invest in a month's worth. I'm going to pick them up today.

So...I'd like to hear anyone else's experience with this medication.
Hopefully there's somebody out there who has had experience with it. How effective was it in helping your asthma?

Thanks!
Denise

I've hadn't heard of it, so I looked it up. I found it's website and that you can get a discount card for it. :)

You're right they have to be swallowed whole.

Hi Joy,

Apparently it's not used very much, or somebody would have commented. My allergy/asthma doc doesn't use it much either, but another doc in his practice (the head doc, actually) uses it quite a lot.

Supposedly it works like Singular, but is much more effective in turning off mucous production (which is my issue). (I'm a regular mucous machine!)

Anyway, one of the side effects can be heartburn, so I assume it's hard on the stomach. I would have to take two humongous pills twice a day. I don't know if I even want to try to swallow them, or have them sitting in my stomach.

Also, you need to have liver checks monthly, as there is some evidence that it has caused trouble in some people. I haven't made the decision whether or not to try it. I'm waiting until after our vacation anyway, because you're only allowed 1-2 alcoholic beverages a week on it, and I can guarantee I'll want more than that on vacation at the beach!

Hopefully somebody will be by with some experience...
Thanks for responding.

Hi All,

I am 30 years old, adult onset allergies, and I went three years taking allergy shots, steroids, singular, advair, and normal anti-histamines. I was probably going through about a big box of tissues a week (at least). Nothing made me better and I was a mess. Bronchitis all the time, blowing my nose constantly and having sinus surgery every few years to clear everything out.

Zyflo is the only drug that has worked for me. I would definitely only consider it if singulair is 'not enough' mucous reduction for you, if you're still coughing stuff up. It is 100% metabolized through the liver, so this is why you have to get your liver enzymes checked- and it's every 3 months, not every month unless you are on other liver meds or have liver problems. The pills are the size of most anti-biotics. You get used to it. Also, you can also take 1 every 6 or 2 every 12 hours. It's prescribed both ways.

I feel like I have gotten my life back. I don't snot everywhere, no sinus headaches, no bronchitis, no steroids in 3 years now, advair dose is decreased, and I haven't needed surgery.

If mucous is your problem, this drug is for you. The blood tests every 3 months and decreasing alcohol intake is well worth it. It's also really expensive, but my allergies and sinus problems no longer rule my life anymore. Well worth it.

Good luck,
Gina
