COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is also a disease of the lungs.  It is usually caused by smoking, but can be brought on by other causes.  The damage that is done to the lungs in COPD is to the aveoli by basically causing destruction to them, so that is it hard to breathe and get enough oxygen to the lungs.

In addition to Asthma, I have COPD and find that right now even in it's mild stages I'm still finding that I get SOB (short of breath), which I'm sure is also a part of having Asthma as well.

For more info on this please visit;

Let me know if any of you have been diagnosed with this disease, and if you also have asthma as well!?

Best wishes to you all, Teri

Teri......I do not have COPD but my Mom does and it is very hard for her to walk any distance without losing her breath .she does have more trouble with the breathing if out in the wind and she also has asthma. Mom has 3 inhalers and the nebulizer machine she uses 3 times daily.She did have oxygen at home but as she is a smoker the respiratory therapist she had coming from vital air suggested that it be removed,and she is ok with the puffers and nebulizer.Mom does not want to quit smoking and she smokes about 2 pks daily .........she is very frail and has other health problems but the COPD will eventually have her on oxygen (she wont be able to smoke ) full time .I do like to get her out of the house for periods of time so that she is not sitting at home by herself,but as I said it usually has to be in nice weather and with no wind.It is very scary to see her get so weak from the COPD...........God Bless

Lyn, I'm so very sorry to hear that your Mom has all this discomfort!  Of course, as you and she know that the smoking makes this worse.  I smoked for many years even with my asthma, so I didn't make my situation any better myself.  Though, I did quit several years ago successfully and plan to keep it that way.

It's so hard and very sad when it's your parents though and you have to watch the downhill decline to their health.  I wish I could offer you more suggestions, but it sure sounds like you're on the right path, just being there for her and offering what you are able and she's able to tolerate.

Please, Lyn, just give me a holler if there's anything that I can do to help?  I've always got a good shoulder and an ear for listening.

Best Wishes to you and your Mom.

Big Hugs, Teri

The Death Rate for Women With COPD is Rising

"From 1980 to 2000, the COPD death rate for women grew much faster than the rate for men. For U.S. women, the rate rose from 20.1 deaths per 100,000 women to 56.7 deaths per 100,000 women over that 20-year span, while for men the rate grew from 73.0 deaths per 100,000 men to 82.6 deaths per 100,000 men."
