hi guys! would like some advice here on my nose.

i'm a 25 year old girl who's generally healthy but have been suffering from what feels like a cut in my right nostril for more than a year. sometimes the pain goes away but most of the time it's there, though i generally can't feel it unless if i press it. anyway im not even sure if its a cut, it might be a sore. i believe the affected area is about 3/4 to 1/2 the size of a rice grain.

to assuage my fears of the worst (excessive googling led me to believe it might be nose cancer), two months ago i went to see an ENT specialist who poked a scope into my nose and reassured me that it was nothing more than a cut aggravated by my excessive nose rubbing (i love rubbing my nose but have really cut down since the "non-healing" cut).

my question is - should i get a second opinion? it hasnt healed even after the trip to the specialist, though i must add all that he prescibed were antihistamines and an anti-allergy spray. i just cant figure how can a cut/sore remain unhealed for such a long period. should i be worried? please help me, i'm a naturally paranoid person :( pls tell me it isnt cancer!

The nose is a very unfriendly place for any healing to be going on. There can be many factors going on that is causing it not to heal. Many of those factors do not include cancer. I would say because of your age, the chances of you getting cancer are slim. But if it hasn't healed after all this time, than yes you should see another doctor.

Sherry's right. Pain in the nose can even be a simple sinus infection. If you are truely that worried, a simple blood test of checking your white and red cells would show if you have cancer. However, it is very unlikely. Did you know even all that pain can come from an incoming pimple?

hi both, thanks for the replies!

i don't think its a sinus infection as the only symptom im getting is a very localised cut or sore-like pain. i read that a non-healing sore could be a sign of nose cancer, which is why i'm worried though the ENT specialised kind of laughed at me when i expressed my concern and he said it was just a case of a cut.

i didn't know there was a simple blood test for cancer! can i get more info on this? thanks!

You might also try putting some otc antibacterial lotion on it, like bacitracin. Noses are full of bacteria and an open sore is a lovely place for them to grow.

Your post caught my eye and I had to respond. When I got my nose pierced, it took about a year and a half to two years for it to completely heal. I too thought that there was something wrong!

I then found out that about 25-30% of people carry the staph infection in their noses...if I had this knowledge prior, I would never have put a hole in it!!!

I am sure that you do not have staph (as I didn't) but my point is, noses can be dirty places. They filter pollution, debris and germs everyday. It is probably a case of the sore just taking awhile to heal due to the less than ideal environment.

Give it some more time, try not to rub it, and like kazbern mentioned, the antibacterial ointment might be a good thing to try.

Well wishes,
